Why Schmeichel left Leicester

Date:

After 11 years at Leicester, Kasper Schmeichel, one of the heroes of the Premier League won in 2015-16 for the team then led by Claudio Ranieri, he left the King Power Stadium complex this past August 3 to sign for Nice, in a decision that surprised most fans, starting, of course, with Leicester’s own.

Kasper Schmeichel, son of the legendary Peter Schmeichel, is on the bench this Sunday in his first game in Nice (1-1 against Toulouse on the first day of Ligue 1). Polish Marcin Bulka, 22, is Nice’s starting goalkeeper. Schmeichel signed for the Côte d’Azur team on August 3 and did not feature in any pre-season games, so Favre decided to keep Bulka.

Kasper Schmeichel has revealed his reasons for changing Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester (who, with Danny Ward in his goal, started the 2022-23 Premier on Sunday with a 2-2 win against Brentford for Nice:cWhen it’s time to take on a new challenge, and he is also excited about the project of the French team.

These are the reasons Kasper Schmeichel gave to explain his signing for Nice: “Leicester is a club I love and have been a part of for many years, there’s no doubt about that. It’s always hard to say goodbye to people you consider family. It was a difficult decision, but I am 35 years old and I think it’s time to try something different, to challenge myself, to grow as a player and a person, to learn a new language and give my family a new experience. Also, I liked the Nice project, which aims to bring the team to the top”.

The Danish goalkeeper has been a member of Leicester since 2011 and he was one of the heroes of the Premier won in 2015-16. He also won the 2020-21 FA Cup and 2021 Community Shield with the ‘Foxes’.
