Athletics coach Toni Minichiello was banned for life after the investigation confirmed that he had a inappropriate “physical sexual behavior” among athletesas announced on Tuesday by the British federation (UK Athletics).
The investigation also revealed that Minichiello, trainer, among others, of Olympic heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis-Hill, was guilty of making “sexually inappropriate gestures and references” to athleteswhile exhibiting “inappropriate behavior and, at times, aggressive, intimidating and emotional abuse”.
According to UKA, the coach committed a large number of offenses over a period of 15 yearswhich constitutes a “serious breach of trust.”
“The UKA has decided that it will not consider any application from Minichiello for a perpetual teaching licence,” the federation said in a statement today.
Minichiello, 56, was until recently one of the most prestigious athletics trainers in the United Kingdom and was named Personality of the Year a decade ago by the BBC, in recognition of Ennis’ gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics.
however, his career has been marked in recent years by many complaints raised by athleteswhich launched an investigation by an independent committee that has now found him guilty of 11 serious charges.
Among other behaviors, the investigation confirmed that Minichiello simulated sexual acts in front of his athletes and subjected some athletes to touching.
