The technician of City of Manchester, Pep Guardiolasays that winning the Champions League is not an obsession and that his unresolved future at the club will not be determined by success in Europe.
Guardiola, whose contract expires in 2023, guided City to four Premier League titles but fell short of the continent’s biggest prize, finishing runners-up in 2020-21, his best finish in the competition.
“My life doesn’t depend on the (Champions League). I want to win, everyone tries. But it’s not an obsession,” Guardiola told reporters ahead of his first league game at West Ham United on Sunday.
Guardiola, who lifted the trophy twice with FC Barcelona, added that he was motivated to improve the league champions despite a trophy-laden season since arriving from Bayern Munich in 2016.
“Improving the team and playing better, this is the main thing for me. The only thing I’m here is so that the team plays better and the individual players also play better,” he said.
“Everyone knows that the titles are there, but I don’t think about what will happen in 11 months if we win or lose… That’s it. If we win we will be great, if not, we will be failures. . Nothing will change.”
