The 2023 Formula E season ends this weekend with a double date in Seoul where Belgian Stoffel Vandoorne will try to decide the title in his favour.
The two races scheduled for Saturday and Sunday starting at 9 am PST will collide on a circuit that loops in and around the Olympic Stadium that hosted the Seoul ’88 Olympic Games and the Seoul Sports Complex.
The lap begins on a narrow and technical course before entering the Jamsil Olympic Stadium. Leaving the stadium, a series of sweeping corners follow each other into a long straight connected by a 90-degree turn, as the circuit loops around the Olympic Park and the drivers jostling for position on this fast 2.6km, 22-turn circuit. .
The Seoul ePrix makes its debut on the Formula E calendar this season, and it does so in a big way by closing out the championship and deciding this year’s champion after a title fight leading up to the final race of the year.
In addition, Seoul will enjoy the 100th race of this category, which will also be a farewell to Gen2 as the next season will bring a new generation of cars that will be faster, lighter and more efficient than anything seen before. The Gen 2 car doubled the battery capacity and eliminated the need to make a pit stop to change vehicles. In Gen 3, cars will be faster.
After playing a double date in London, Stoffel Vandoorne (Mercedes) leads with 185 points, 36 ahead of Mitch Evans (Jaguar), 41 ahead of Edoardo Mortara (Venturi) and 57 ahead of Jean-Éric Vergne (DS Techeetan) with 58 points at stake. Vandoorne needs to add 23 points in both events to clinch the title regardless of what his rivals do. Of his three opponents, it is New Zealander Evans who retains some serious options should the former F1 driver who has been faultless in his previous four appointments make a mistake.
As for the constructors’ championship, Mercedes, which will leave the championship at the end of the campaign after selling its team to McLaren, also comes with a certain cushion over its rivals. The Germans have 91 points, while Venturi and Techeeta complete the podium, with 255 and 244 points respectively.
