The car that stops when the driver falls asleep

Date:

ADAS advanced driver assistance systems work with the data they receive from multiple sources.
The ‘brain’ of the system it aggregates the information generated by all of them and produces a reliable recognition of the environment. The aim is twofold, on the one hand to make driving easier and on the other hand to avoid traffic accidents as much as possible. They have a possible battery of sensors for this: cameras, radar, ultrasound and LiDAR laser. And there are systems that also receive detailed three-dimensional road information from the navigation system.

One example is the new Volvo EX90, the brand’s next all-electric SUV, which will have a safety system that will paralyze the vehicle if the driver falls asleep.

The car unfolds
a standard security superior to any previous model, as the company revealed in a statement. “We will continue to innovate until cars stop crashing, until we are a 100% carbon-free company,” emphasized the company, which has defined the EX90 as the beginning of a new era.

The development of Volvo’s latest safety technology is based on an understanding of human behavior based on decades of research. In this sense, the new vehicle will feature state-of-the-art sensor technology that will enable:
detect mood and driver fatigue.

LiDAR, which stands for ‘Light Detection and Ranging’, is the name of Volvo’s new remote sensing method. These use light in the form of a laser to measure ranges with a high degree of accuracy.

The difference LiDAR can make to real-life safety “is remarkable,” according to the brand, which estimates that the system can reduce serious accidents by up to 20%, while
general accident prevention can be improved by up to 9%.

LiDAR technology can detect pedestrians up to 250 meters away and something as small and dark as a tire on a black road 120 meters away. All this while driving at highway speeds. Since it does not rely on light like a camera, the system works both day and night.

The Volvo EX90 will have:
an exclusive set of eight roomsfive radars, 16 ultrasonic sensors and a state-of-the-art LiDAR sensor.
