How and where to apply for the DGT environmental label that will be needed for circulation?

Date:

With the entry into force of the
Climate Change Act in 2023, the way we understand vehicle traffic in Spain will change. And it is that, from then on, in the
cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants It is mandatory to have an operational
own low-emission zone (ZBE), where some vehicles will not be able to circulate with the same freedom. Only hybrid cars (18.4% of the total number of vehicles) and electric cars (3.9% of the total) will be able to do this, while combustion cars (without label, label B and label C) will have to meet certain restrictions .

Up to 149 Spanish cities will be affected by this new regulation which will also restrict the use of
environmental labels in Spanish cars that until now were only required in cities like Madrid or Barcelona. With the introduction of the new ZBE zones from 2023, many municipalities will demand that vehicles that want to drive through the city use the
environmental sticker of the Directorate-General for Traffic (
DGT) to control their access.

But what is it, how does it work and what is the DGT environmental label for? How and where can I request this label for my vehicle? This is all you need to know.

The DGT’s environmental apparatus «is a way of classifying vehicles according to their»
energy efficiency, taking into account their environmental impact. The intention is to distinguish those cars that have more respect for the environment and
restrict traffic of the most polluting vehicles in major cities.

In some cities, vehicles that do not have this environmental label
circulation prohibited on the public road. Madrid, for example, is one of the cities where cars that do not put this sticker in the lower right corner of the windshield are sanctioned under the Mobility Regulation.

There are four different DGT environmental labels, depending on the type of vehicle you own. The vehicles that do not belong to one of these groups are not entitled to:
no ‘sticker’“by failing to meet the requirements to be labeled as a clean vehicle.”

To find out which badge belongs to your vehicle, you can discover it via the miDGT app, by telephone by calling 060 or in person at any head office or traffic bureau.

Before applying for the environmental label from the DGT, you must know which label your vehicle is entitled to. If the requirements are met, all you need to do is apply for the label and buy it at the post office next to your
DNI and driver’s license, in the network of workshops of the Spanish Confederation of Workshops (CETRAA) and other networks of authorized workshops, at the headquarters of the Administrative Managers, at the Institute of Automotive Studies (IDEAUTO) or through the Ganvam Association in the case of vehicle fleets . This process costs approx
five eurobut the price may vary depending on the shipping cost or seller’s policy.

This environmental label allows:
circulate in Spain. However, from the DGT, they warn: «If you are going to drive your vehicle in Germany, Austria, Denmark, France or any other country with an environmental catalog system, before you go, you should inquire whether it is necessary to obtain a badge in the country you are traveling to, how to do it and the criteria for circulating ».
