Ukraine on the move – Kherson: Separatists now hope for evacuation

Date:

Only recently has Russia declared the Kherson region a national territory – but it seems difficult to defend it. After successful recaptures by Ukraine, the pro-Russian head of government is now calling for the evacuation of civilians in preparation for the coming fighting in the city. Meanwhile, Russia is trying to establish a new front in Kherson.

“We have proposed that all residents of the Kherson region who want to escape (Ukrainian) attacks can go to other (Russian) regions,” Prime Minister Vladimir Saldo told Telegram on Thursday. “Take your children and go,” he called to the residents.

Fights are coming
The Moscow leadership asked Saldo to help organize the evacuations. The Kherson region of southern Ukraine, which was annexed by Russia at the end of September, has been the target of a counter-offensive by the Ukrainian army for several weeks, which may advance further.

The British Ministry of Defense said in its daily situation report on Thursday that the Russian occupation authorities expect fighting in the city of Kherson and are therefore preparing evacuation measures.

Russians lose protection at river
The Russian armed forces therefore seem to be trying to consolidate the new course of the front. The British Ministry of Defense said the area west of the village of Mylowe in the Kherson region was still under heavy fighting after Russian forces withdrew about 12 miles (20 kilometers) in early October.

Due to the Ukrainian advance, the Russians no longer benefited from the protection of the Inhulez River. Most Russian units are also undermanned.
