Dealers respond Teresa Ribera: “90% of customers do not have a garage or charger”

Date:

The sales figures do not accompany, although in the accumulated of the year the electrified vehicles
increase their turnover by 26%, up to 59,824 (including electric and plug-in hybrids). Electric vehicle registrations rose 21.1% in September to 3,829 units registered in this month, but the total share for the year is 3.55% of the total number of vehicles sold in Spain.

The two main reasons, such as last weekend to ABC by the
Vice President and Minister for the Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, are that the electric car is «very expensive and another one that (the citizen) goes to the dealer and they advise him not to do it. Because that’s what happens.”

A statement that does not correspond to reality, as explained by the association of official dealers Faconauto and that of GANVAM car sellers and repairers.

Gerardo Pérez, president of Faconauto, is strong: “The statements of the minister show”
a great ignorance of reality of the electric vehicle and especially of the consumer. Today, consumers are trying to pay their mortgage, go to the supermarket, get dressed and meet their basic needs. And if the minister asks that all consumers buy an electric vehicle, it is that she does not know the reality and that is worrying.

According to the head of this association, dealers and manufacturers have made major investments to “launch a revolution, a change in customer mindset as complicated as the transition from an internal combustion engine to an electric one.”

Pérez explains that dealers have always been “advisers to our customers and, as you will understand, it is very easy to prescribe an electric vehicle, and we do.”
in major capitals such as Madrid or Barcelona, where there are already some charging points ». However, the director of Faconauto finds it very difficult “for a salesperson from Logroño, Écija or Linares to recommend the purchase of an electric vehicle” when in some cases there are no charging points on public roads.

Thus, the commercial will recommend with more intensity the purchase of an electric «in those areas where public authorities have done their work. That work is essentially to put chargers on public roads or facilitate their existence. The fact that it takes one and a half years for an administrative authorization to place a high-voltage charger on public roads does not help,
but I don’t know if the minister knows«, the chairman of Faconauto condemns.

Van GANVAM are general manager
Fernando Miguelezo, ensures that dealers «we are interested in selling electric vehicles. First of all because the dealers are offering what they have and the brands have put a lot of effort and investment so that we now have electric vehicles.”

And second, because the sales teams are “trained to
analyze customer needs, and the electric car is part of the incentives of the brands and the dealers themselves. The dealer has a portfolio of products, with a wide range of electrical options, and of course advises the buyer based on his particularities and preferences.”

Another question is the price, as they share the minister’s reflection in this aspect of GANVAM, as «the price is not accessible to all incomes. It is necessary to guarantee a just ecological transition from a social point of view, where large parts of society are not excluded from electric mobility for economic reasons.”

From this organization they believe that ‘the reality is that the citizen is confused’. a) Yes,
European Union announcement the ban on the sale of vehicles with CO2 emissions from 2035 «we have started at the end, as we have not yet discussed the possibilities that lie ahead with electric vehicles, hydrogen or zero-emission fuels».

As explained
Fernando Miguelezo, the reality is that if the proposal is that of the electric car «90% of the people who enter the dealership do not have a garage and therefore do not have the option of having their own charger. In order for the electric car to evolve, we must first offer a charging network that facilitates mobility.”

Ganvam’s president goes further and believes that:
the European Commission’s environmental policy is nonsense. “And we’ve been saying that from the start. It is true that there are some countries where zero-emission mobility works, but not in southern Europe, especially in Spain. We must recognize that we are doing something wrong when the situation in Portugal is very different. Do the dealers there recommend the electric car? If anyone thinks we can stop selling combustion in 2035 and stop selling it in 2050, they don’t know what they’re talking about.

Only 60% of the population is aware of electric car technologies, while only 30% (3 out of 10) knows other technological alternatives to reduce emissions from transport, such as renewable fuels or hydrogen. This is one of the conclusions of the study on the perception and assessment of new mobility technologies in road transport, conducted by GAD3 and Fundación Repsol in the
Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) and Corell Foundation, with the support of entities such as Anfac, Faconauto and Sernauto.

Another conclusion of the report is that 50% of the population postpones the decision to buy a new car due to a lack of clarity about
mobility technologies and existing regulations, and increases the intention to purchase used vehicles. In this sense, young people have the highest percentage of intention to buy a used car and a lower percentage of intention to buy a new car.

The data shows that 64% of the population is not aware that a combustion engine with very low or zero net CO2 emissions is possible on renewable fuels. These fuels can already be used in current vehicles, taking advantage of the existing distribution and fueling infrastructure. The survey also shows that 50% of Spaniards do not know that
electric cars cause CO2 emissions during their production and when they use electricity that is not renewable.

From GANVAN they confirm that they do not feel supported by the board. A proof of this is that
PERTE VEC excludes brokerage activities and thus to distributors (sellers and repairers). “If we want to make electric cars, we need to be able to sell them and that requires a shared vision: neither manufacturers nor distributors individually will be able to build electric and connected mobility that meets the expectations of the digital customer.” explains Fernando Miguelez.

Of Faconauto, they believe that “the government is persecuting the combustion engine and that, after all, they are consumers with less purchasing power,” he assures.
Gerardo Perez, for whom «the great revolution of the electric vehicle can only be assumed today by 15% of the population, that is, the population with an income of more than 30 thousand euros. The rest are outsider and perplexed because they can’t change their car anymore, they can’t have a less polluting and safer car and they have to go to the used market where the big star is the vehicle that is more than 10 years old.

The head of the Association of Official Dealers confirms that «when we talk about ‘Well-being’, we are talking about everything, including that you can travel with your family in safe conditions. And this government, with its policies, makes it difficult for the poorest incomes to buy a safer and less polluting car.

From GANVAM they in turn refer to the need to improve incentives since “Moves works, but it has to work better”. He emphasizes that “now that we…
we found 17 different plans and it is undoubtedly necessary to simplify management and processing throughout the national territory».

However, the Moves plan is not that satisfying for Faconauto. The president explains that “we cannot be satisfied with its operation if there are a lot of consumers paying taxes on the income before they get the incentive.” He argues that
the amalgamation of 17 autonomous communities making different plans and at different speeds means that “not all Spaniards have the same opportunities to take advantage of these plans”.

On the fiscal front, GANVAM’s commitment is to apply a reduced VAT rate to electric vehicles to lower the price barrier and to apply tax deductions to promote the electric vehicle as a business mobility solution. “It must be guaranteed”
accessible and affordable mobility and this cannot be done by thinking only of minority solutions”, with help that is not just to trade in a car for a new or used car, but that “that old car can be exchanged for mileage wallets that in the various partial solutions ».

Spain ranks last in Europe in vehicle and fuel tax revenues, according to the report
‘The good tax guide’ comparing the tax systems for the registration of passenger and commercial vehicles in 31 countries of the continent.

According to Transport & Environment, our country stands out among the “worst in Europe”, because it continues to offer “more benefits” when purchasing
polluting vehicles than electric cars.

As for the intensive purchase of zero- and low-emission vehicles, Faconauto believes it needs to go something much deeper than what has been proposed. For a revolution of this caliber «it is not enough to give an incentive to someone who buys a car for more than 50 thousand euros. That doesn’t make sense. In addition, requests to have a vehicle removed when that customer has never driven a vehicle with these characteristics.

His proposal consists of zero-emission vehicles without VAT and in addition:
advantages for using these cars in cities. But especially the charging infrastructure “of which, as we said, 350 thousand points are needed and there are not even 20 thousand.” Gerardo Pérez assures us that in Spain we are behind all of Europe, where in some cases they are already rolling back the incentives because it more than meets its targets. “And in Spain it seems that they are not being fulfilled because of the concessionaire… That response from the minister is that it is not wasted,” says Gerardo Pérez.

As for the data and forecasts, Pérez assures that “if anyone thinks we can stop selling combustion by 2035 and stop using it by 2050, they don’t know what they’re talking about. Unless we want many people not to own a car and not be able to have the freedom of mobility they have today. If so, it can be achieved. if we want to
that every average Spaniard has an environmentally friendly car and that certainly won’t happen with the rents we have now. But they are making predictions for 2035-2050 where none of the politicians we have now will continue and they will not be held accountable. We will be and we will remember that we were right«.
