These are the serious defects for which more and more cars are suspending the MOT

Date:

The General Directorate of Traffic, through the agents of the Traffic Group of the Guardia Civil,
between 10 and 16 Octobera campaign aimed at monitoring the safety of vehicles on the road, in which a total of 237,565 vehicles were checked.

Of these, 10,894 drivers were penalized for a variety of reasons, one of which is the ITV’s failure to act. 56% of the complaints submitted (6,137 complaints out of a total of 10,962) concerned this crime.

If we consider
complaints filed for this reason Depending on the type of vehicle, this percentage rises to a worrying 65% for vans and 61% for passenger cars. On the contrary, only 8.5% of the buses and 28% of the trucks checked did not have the ITV.

They have also increased
serious defects in emissions contaminants detected in Madrid’s ITV: 19,000 more cases in the third quarter of the year. Despite this, in the period between July and September 2022, 81.3% of vehicles passing the technical inspection in the Autonomous Community passed the first.

Vehicles in Madrid are increasingly failing the pollutant emissions control test conducted by vehicle technical inspection stations, as evidenced by data from the
Archive of vehicles of the Community of Madrid to AEMA-ITV, the Association of Entities for the Technical Inspection of Vehicles of the Community of Madrid.

During the third quarter of the year
55,048 serious defects were found in this chapter among the 588,967 vehicles inspected; that is 19,138 more than in the previous quarter, when there were 35,910 defects. This is an increase that has been recorded gradually since the beginning of the year.

In the first quarter of 2022, pollutant emissions accounted for 23.2% of rejections in the Madrid ITV; in the second they represented 25.2% of the total; and in the third quarter the figure was 27.2%. From AEMA-ITV, they recall that this situation can be changed with proper vehicle maintenance. Cleaning of air, oil and fuel filters, as well
proper maintenance of the FAP particulate filter It makes it possible to guarantee that the vehicle is in good condition to pass this test, contributing to protecting the environment and saving lives.

According to the latest study published by the Carlos III University of Madrid, thanks to the work of ITV stations in 2021, early casualties due to exposure to
air pollutants are estimated to be around 575. And if the total number of vehicles that fail to pass the mandatory inspections had done so, at least 207 additional deaths could have been avoided. In other words, a total of 782 human lives could have been saved.

“The ITV helps improve air quality by controlling harmful particulates and gases and by helping to remove from circulation vehicles that may exceed permitted emissions and are also beyond repair. The technical inspection of vehicles is without doubt an essential measure to minimize the environmental impact of transport systems and thereby save lives. It should be remembered that according to data from the European Environment Agency, air pollution is linked to the deaths of more than 30,000 people per year in Spain,” he said.
Jorge Soriano, President of AEMA-ITV.

Despite the increase in the detection of serious defects in the pollutant emission test, the data shows that of the 588,967 vehicles that passed technical inspections in Madrid,
most of them, 478,919, passed the ITV satisfactorily on the first, representing 81.3% of the total. A figure that rises to 93% at the second inspections.

Regarding the approval rate by vehicle type, passenger cars fall within the categories that provide the best data with a rejection rate of 18%;
heavy vehiclesfor their part, are those who show the worst percentage, with 25.5% rejection.
