Six decades the guide to buying cars in Spain

Date:

Due to the major changes in the automotive industry, it has become increasingly difficult to choose a winner among the finalists

Choose the best car of each year
is a task that has become increasingly complicated as competition forces manufacturers to differentiate themselves from their rivals with better value propositions. These confrontations have always been fierce, but it’s easy to recall the years when it was a clear advantage for a particular model before that exercise.

For the engine part,
“Which car should I buy?” It is one of the most common questions we deal with that we answer with a simple “it depends”. An answer that is not professional enough for us, nor satisfactory for the interlocutors. For this reason, we have been choosing the best car on the market for over 50 years, trying to make choosing a vehicle a little easier for Spaniards.

Last year marked the 50th edition of this competition, entering its sixth decade since its opening in 1973. Today, the victorious Renault 5 would be impossible to find due to pollution or safety restrictions imposed by the European Commission, but it is an example of how far the auto industry has come since then.

It went from all-analog machines to the “smartphone on wheels”,
containing 100 million lines of code, about 10 times more than that in a commercial airplane. On the one hand, this allows them to be much more advanced tools for everyday use, on the other hand, they expose the great interdependence that the automotive industry has with the semiconductor industry, as the last two years have shown, in which it is easy to expect waiting times of more than six months. find to buy a new car.

In an ideal world, the wait time to buy a car should be less than six weeks; Just as in an ideal world it should be easy to choose a Car of the Year, in 2022 both goals are difficult to achieve.

Starting with the match. The progress may seem marginal, but
every year more polished models are faced. If you compare them with the candidates from five years ago, it is obvious, but with those from fifteen years ago, it is striking. And for 2022, the 12 candidates are no exception: any of them could be founded with the title of this edition.

The
Alfa Romeo Tonal It is the Italian brand’s small SUV, a strong start since its entry into the Stellantis conglomerate to choose to be an option with a sporty and “premium” character in one of the most sought after segments in Europe.

The
Citroen C5X represents the return to sedans by the French brand, with a strong commitment to unconventional design and different types of engines.

The
Cupra born It is the first model of the Seat sports car ‘spin-off’, of which versions with more power and autonomy are already on the market. It is one of the zero-emission generalists of the Volkswagen Group with the sportiest design and behavior.

The
Dacia Jogger enters the ring with a value proposition, as it is the cheapest of all competitors (15,000 euros) and the only one that can carry seven people. It is also one of the few minivan commitments on the market that also comes with a much more attractive design thanks to the brand’s updated lines.

The
Ford Mustang Mach-E GT It’s the blue oval’s entry into the zero-emissions market, and it does it in a big way: a powerful SUV coupe with unmistakable design elements that immediately bring to mind the legendary ‘muscle-car’ of the 1960s. The finish and handling are excellent and the segment is ideally suited to reach a market where there is an increasing demand for electric cars.

The
Honda Civic is presented with its eleventh generation, proof of the evolution of the compact car that confirmed the success of the Japanese brand and legitimized it as a car manufacturer able to take on the West. In Spain it arrives with a hybrid engine and impeccable driving sensations.

The
kia sportage it means distilling all the elements desired by the market and uniting them in an attractive package with a reasonable price: SUV silhouette with diesel, petrol and hybrid engines and a modern design. This formula led the Korean brand to join other brands that never saw it as a plausible competitor.

The
Opel Astra is another entry from Stellantis, the new version of the compact car that came to dominate the market. Now, under the Franco-Italian-American consortium, it is launching a new platform, a new design and new engines, including a 100% electric drive.

Something similar happens with the
Peugeot308, which shares a platform with the Astra. The lion brand takes a more aggressive position in the market in terms of handling and design, introducing a new logo, more engines and a more refined design than its predecessors, as well as a family version.

The
North Star 2 It is the sedan of the electric ‘premium’ brand derived from the well-known Volvo. Like the Mustang, it comes at the right time for electric mobility, with a silhouette that’s midway between a sedan and a coupe SUV, exceptional finishes and a powerful engine.

The
renault australia It is the first on the list to be produced in Spain, specifically in Palencia, where two more brothers will arrive. A rational argument on all sides, the Austral is the brand’s commitment to retaking the C-segment, which it did in the past with the Mégane and now plans to repeat with the SUV silhouette. It offers conventional hybrid engines, the best Renault connectivity to date and the brand’s new aesthetic lines.

Finally another ‘made-in-Spain’. The
volkswagen taigo It has been produced at the Landaben (Navarra) plant since the end of 2021. It’s an evolution of the B-segment into the modern world, where SUV coupe silhouettes are more in demand than ever. The engines currently focus on the combustion of gasoline.

These are the 12 finalists, but refining the selection so far has been quite a challenge in itself – the pre-selection started with 20 models that could all be a great purchase in 2022.

Which of these 12 cars will be the winner of the 51st running of the ABC Car of the Year is now in the hands of our 36 judges, all from the automotive press industry and ABC ‘premium’ subscribers, who have already made a difference in close votes in the past.

There can be no more than one award – except in 1994, when the votes are tied – and that is why this edition, the second of the sixth decade, makes competitiveness higher than ever and guarantees the quality of the cars in the future.
