Deaths in road accidents will increase compared to 2022

deaths in road accidents
keep growing. Despite Traffic’s efforts to lower speed limits, increase point deductions on key distractions behind the wheel, and demand maximum caution and courtesy while driving, the increase in deaths from 2022 is clear.

This is evident from the latest registered figures. The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) reports that last weekend, November 19 and 20, there were 9 fatal accidents in which 13 people died. 2 of them were vulnerable users, namely 2 motorcyclists. 8 accidents occurred on conventional roads and 1 on motorways or dual carriageways. Among the accidents there are: 5 exits from the road and 3 collisions.

If we compare it to last year’s claims, and 10 more days from the end of November,
we have already been surpassed in 2 these deaths compared to 2022.

At this time of year you have to be very careful behind the wheel in bad weather. And it is precisely due to bad weather conditions, such as rain, that the number of accidents increases considerably. According to the data from Acierto.com, the rain is down by 81%
the phenomenon with the greatest presence in accidents of traffic. Snow (9%), fog (6%) and wind (4%) follow.

Driving in the rain reduces tire grip, reduces visibility, increases the risk of aquaplaning, changes the visual environment and increases driver fatigue, who must drive more attentively. So much so that driving in the rain increases the risk of an accident by up to 70%. In addition, it should be taken into account that some driver assistance systems often fail in the rain. This is the case with an emergency stop and the runway maintenance system.

In terms of carelessness, the data indicates that 49% of drivers only take the car to the workshop if they discover a technical problem, and only a third carry out the overhauls prescribed by the manufacturer. 21% say they are very expensive while 19% say
act this way out of ignorance. Nor is the vehicle checked when boarding on a bridge like the one we just passed. In this case, the percentage is 25%. The lack of maintenance is now also transferred to particularly important elements, when visibility is reduced: the wiper blades. 7 out of 10 motorists admit to driving with bad windshield wipers. And 60% don’t even check the windshield
ensure good visibility.

Changing the tires is another pending issue. Almost 70% of drivers do not change them in time. The risks of not doing so skyrocket in the event of long journeys and inclement weather such as rain, snow and wind hitting these blustery days and reducing adherence. Added to this is driving under the influence of substances such as alcohol, the second leading cause of death on the road and a growing problem. 45% of drivers have ever driven under the influence of alcohol. And 14% confirm that they do it regularly.
