In view of the presentation of the first off-road Lamborghini supercar, the manufacturer takes the opportunity to reveal more details. Introduced in 2019 and used as the stylistic and technical base of the vehicle,
will be on the market in 2023. Designed, engineered and built to explore any terrain, the Sterrato is the forerunner of Lamborghini’s ‘Driving Humans Beyond’ concept: visionary work toward new horizons and inspiring new generations of supercar enthusiasts.

“It all started with one of the first Huracán prototypes, chassis number 53,” he said.
Maurizio Reggiani, vice president of Lamborghini Motorsport and former CTO, during the development of the Sterrato concept. “My team worked on that car to create a lab on wheels and install off-road elements to provide more ground clearance. The first time I got the chance to drive it I immediately realized how much fun this amazing supercar concept could be. After building and developing a complete prototype, our board of directors was also sold on the emotions that the car evoked. After all, the car was born on Nardò’s Strada Bianca, which is to Lamborghini’s off-road development what the ‘Green Hell’ of the Nürburgring is to racing.”

“The Sterrato is one of the projects closest to my heart,” he says
Rouven Mohr, technical director of Automobili Lamborghini. “It started during my first professional experience at Lamborghini as head of vehicle development. We were testing in Nardò on the ‘Strada Bianca’ and some of us had the idea to also drive an old and adapted Huracán on this dirt road. In the evening, after the first test, I was having dinner with Maurizio Reggiani and Mitja Borkert and we worked out the idea of creating a car halfway between the Huracán and the Urus. The aim was not so much to create an off-road vehicle as an unprecedented supercar for all surface conditions. So we built the prototype, a really great car: great fun to drive on dirt roads and in a real rally setup. Now I am proud of the birth of the final version, which will also make our customers very happy.”

The 2019 Huracán Sterrato concept combined the power of the 5.2L V10 engine with the versatility of a car designed to ensure maximum off-road driving pleasure. The exterior conveyed the adventurous spirit of the Sterrato, combined with the typical characteristics of a supercar.

The ground clearance has been increased and the angle of attack and departure has been improved. The width of the tracks on both axles was increased: the tires with wide sidewalls were placed in flared wheel arches with integrated air intakes, all of which added to the car’s impressive and adventurous appearance.

“Designing the Huracán Sterrato concept was fun from the start – it gave us a unique opportunity to push boundaries in a new way, translating our design DNA into unimaginable proportions,” he said.
Mitja Borkert, Head of Design at Lamborghini. “Internally, we were able to bring this concept to life and show not only how cool and brave the idea was, but also its production potential. Our stated goal was to design something completely different, for active, sporty people who are looking for fun and want to ride even off the roads and tracks. The final Sterrato is definitely a Lamborghini, as the concept was from the very first sight, while also propelling Lamborghini into a unique new arena.”

Wider tires with raised sidewalls have been specially developed to improve grip and shock absorption. The wide and robust open studs on the edges of the tires promoted the self-cleaning of the wheels and provided excellent grip on gravel surfaces with better traction and braking, as well as being highly resistant to damage. The underbody and front frame of the Sterrato concept are reinforced, integrated with aluminum elements and protected by an aluminum skid plate, the same material used for the side skirt reinforcements.
