Tragic balance of the DGT with 1,045 dead so far this year

In the month of November, 97 deaths were registered, 8 more than in the same month of 2019

The traffic accident figures are tragic, exceeding the number of deaths so far this year until the end of November compared to pre-pandemic numbers, according to figures provided this Thursday by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT). A total of 1,045 people have died in traffic accidents on Spanish roads. This figure exceeds the number of road deaths in the same period of 2021,
which amounted to 917 peopleas well as the 1,000 deaths of 2019, the reference year for the latest prior to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Compared to the month of November 2022, this period has ended with a total of 85 fatal accidents on Spanish roads, killing 97 people,
that is 8 more than in the same month of 2019.

The day with the most fatalities was Friday, November 18 with 7 deaths. In contrast, there were 3 days with 0 deaths, Sunday 6, Thursday 24 and Monday 28 November.

This accident rate has occurred in a context of
increase in the number of trips (+3.9%). Specifically, 33 million long-distance movements were registered during the entire month, compared to 31.8 million in November 2019.

Conventional highways remain the roads with the highest number of fatal accidents, with seven out of ten fatalities on these roads. 26 people have died on highways and highways, two more than in November 2019.

By type of accident, the DGT figures indicate an increase in the number of collisions,
based on the 37 deceased in November 2019 to 44 in November this year 2022.

In terms of means of transport, there is a slight increase in the number of deaths on motorcycles (+4) and with a truck of up to 3,500 kg (+5).
Half the dead pedestrians they occurred in accidents on motorways and dual carriageways (6).

With regard to the use of safety systems, 16 deceased persons did not use the safety device at the time of the accident: a cyclist, a motorcyclist, seven in a car, three in a van and four in a truck.

By age group, Traffic has highlighted the decline among people aged 35 to 44, going from 17 deaths in November 2019 to nine in November this year. On the contrary,
the deceased have grown between 55 and 64 yearsgoing from 15 to 23.

In the case of the Autonomous Communities,
Castilla y León is the community that recorded the largest increase with 14 more deaths compared to the figure recorded in the same month of 2019. Where the most deaths have occurred is in Catalonia, with 18 deaths, compared to La Rioja, Ceuta and Melilla, which closed the month with no road fatalities.
