lighting and signalling It is the one in which more defects are detected, and trucks and vans are the vehicles that fail the most due to defects when they pass inspection.

This is data provided by the Spanish Association of Collaborative Entities of the Administration in the Technical Inspection of Vehicles AECA-ITV. According to their figures, of the total number of vehicles checked,
4,040,222 failed the mandatory inspection the first time, which amounts to 18.5%. While most of the vehicles visiting ITV stations, a total of 17,789,518, passed the positive, which is 81.5%.

That is evident from the data
vans and trucks weighing more than 3,500 kg It is the vehicles that are in the worst condition, as they are the ones that show the most serious and very serious defects in the inspections; in fact, 28.9% of them fail the ITV the first time. Trailers and semi-trailers are in second place, with a 24.4% failure rate; then there are buses and coaches with a 23.6% unfavorable ITV; and in the case of vans and lorries under 3,500kg, for their part, 23.8% do not approve the ITV the first time.

On the other hand, ambulances and taxis are the vehicles with the highest percentage of favorable ITV with 87.7% and only 12.3% rejection. Agricultural vehicles are in second place, with 85.1% favorable ITV; third, passenger cars,
with 82.8% approval and, in fourth place, motorcycles and quads with 82% of ITV approved the first time.

Among those that fail the ITV, the data shows that an average of 2.1 major defects are detected per vehicle. Being
ambulances and taxis those with the lowest ratio (0.9 serious defects per vehicle) and trailers and semi-trailers the highest (2.8 serious defects per vehicle).

One of the main reasons why 18.5% of Spanish vehicles fail the ITV on the first inspection is the lighting and signalling, the part in which they are detected.
more serious defects by 26%. It is worth noting how important the correct functioning of the lighting system in a vehicle is, as it allows the correct perception of the road and the correct visibility of the vehicle to the rest of the occupants on the road. See and be seen.

Axles, wheels, tires and suspension, with 21% of major defects detected, is again the second chapter with the most defects detected in the ITV. The difference between tires below the minimum threshold and tires in perfect condition can tip the balance in the event of an accident on public roads.

16% of rejections in the ITV are due to faulty operation of the pollutant emission control systems. This is a vital section; That is why the study “Contribution of the Technical Vehicle Inspection (ITV) to road safety and the environment”, carried out by the
Duque de Santomauro Motor Vehicle Safety Institute (ISVA) of the Carlos III University of Madrid (UC3M), due to exposure to particulate matter (PM), the ITV stations have avoided 575 premature victims in the year 2021. And if the total number of vehicles that do not participate in the mandatory inspections if they had done so, at least 207 additional deaths could have been avoided.

The braking part it represents 13% of the serious deficiencies found; be a key element in any incident on the road.

The data presented by AECA-ITV also shows that the age of the fleet was 14.6 years at the end of 2021. “This is a figure that continues to rise and poses a risk to road safety in our country. We are facing a situation of extreme tension as absenteeism at the ITV is still very high and this, with an aging fleet, is driving road accident rates up,” he assured.
