The DGT warns: This is how they fine the section radars

Date:

The speed control procedure in a section is as follows: the cameras – one per lane – continuously register all vehicles at the entrance and exit of the tunnel

Sectional radars are a way of controlling speed, not at specific mile points, as fixed radars do, but in
stretches of road of several kilometers. The first started in 2010 in the Guadarrama tunnel, on the A-6. In reality, this kind of surveillance doesn’t work with radars, but with artificial vision cameras, similar to those that the DGT says are penalized at traffic lights in some cities.

The speed control in a section is as follows: the cameras – one per lane – continuously record all vehicles at the entrance and exit of the tunnel. Before
use continuous infrared lighting -due to lighting conditions- which the human eye cannot capture. The cameras are synchronized via fiber optic and satellite so that their clocks show the same time.

With the stored data, a computer ‘matches’ the same number plates, checks the passing times of each vehicle and calculates the average speed. When it is determined that the speed is above the speed limit, the system sends the photos (entry and exit) to the DGT Automated Complaints Treatment Center in León, so that it processes the complaint and sends it by post to the owner of the vehicle to identify the offending driver.

Of course, the Associated European Motorists (AEA) found not only that these section radars do not discriminate against the offending vehicle when two vehicles pass through the same point in parallel, but also that the margins of error are not exceeded. properly applied legally established.

Likewise, and although many people are not aware of it, the DGT makes the list of fixed and mobile radars distributed throughout Spain available to all interested parties. The list of the speed traps can be consulted in less than a minute and each section sets the exact point where each radar is located. In addition, the information is updated every Monday.
