New CUPRA León eTSI 150 CV DSG: performance, technology and the brand’s first model with the ECO environmental label

CUPRA boosts its compact Leon by expanding its engine and equipment range. For example, the new version of Access has the engine with Mild-Hybrid electric hybridization technology 1.5-liter eTSI of 150 hp and with DSG automatic transmission. This engine benefits from the advantages of the DGT ECO label, available for the first time in the CUPRA range.

The 150 hp eTSI version of the CUPRA León not only focuses on the new drive system with 48-volt micro-hybridization technology. Now the standard equipment is even more complete to offer greater added value. For example, this version is equipped as standard with Full LED headlights and dynamic turn signals, a rear diffuser in body color with tailpipes in dark aluminum or alloy wheels with a diameter of 18 inches. It also has a 10-inch information screen and a multitude of driving assistants, such as the automatic braking assistant in the city, the involuntary lane change assistant and the automatic short/spot assistant.

Among the optional equipment, it is worth mentioning, as a great novelty, the Matrix LED headlights, which make it possible to drive at night with the main beam always on and without dazzling other vehicles. Also worth mentioning is an optional package, which includes, among other things, a specific rear spoiler in black or aluminum side sills. The CUPRA León eTSI 150 CV also has options that improve its dynamics, such as adaptive chassis control, which allows the firmness of the shock absorbers to be varied up to 15 positions, along with the changes made by the CUPRA Drive Profile driving mode selector.

The CUPRA León 1.5 eTSI 150 combines Mild-Hybrid micro-hybridization technology with a 48-volt auxiliary battery with the petrol engine, which significantly reduces consumption with minimum average figures of only 5.6 liters of petrol. This technology uses a starter generator and a 48V lithium-ion battery and allows the Leon to coast with the engine off in some driving scenarios, recover energy during braking and assist the engine with electrical assistance. The CUPRA Leon is equipped with an electric brake booster, which reacts faster than a conventional system and allows braking energy to be recovered with the 48V system of the eTSI version. Finally, this new 150 hp eTSI version is front-wheel drive and equipped as standard with the electronic XDS differential system, which improves traction. The list prices of the different variants of the León eTSI start at 33,340 euros, excluding launch discounts and financing with the brand.

The new CUPRA León 1.5 eTSI delivers its 150 hp between 5,000 and 6,000 rpm and generates a maximum torque of 250 Nm between 1,500 and 3,500 rpm. All this allows it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 8.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 214 km/h. In the Sports Tourer model with “family” body, the performance difference with the 5-door version is barely noticeable: 8.9 seconds acceleration and 216 km/h top speed. As for fuel consumption, it averages between 5.6 and 6.3 liters depending on the type of driving style that is more or less sporty.

The CUPRA León is equipped as standard with the progressive steering system, which ensures maximum maneuverability even on the most complicated circuits and transmits a lot of information to the driver. Likewise, the Dynamic Chassis Control, which adjusts the firmness of the shock absorbers in milliseconds, enables truly sporty driving in the firmest mode, or comfortable in the softest, with up to 15 positions to choose from. The driver can change and adapt the driving behavior of the CUPRA Leon 1.5 eTSI as desired via three different modes: Comfort, Sport and Individual. These profiles change the character of the vehicle, from everyday driving to maximum performance driving.

In the 5-door body version, the CUPRA León is 4.40 meters long, 1.80 meters wide and 1.44 meters high. In the Sports Tourer version, on the other hand, the new CUPRA León is 4.66 meters long. The wheelbase of the 5-door versions and the “family” is 2.69 meters, which translates into a large space for passengers that is clearly noticeable in the rear seats. In the Sports Tourer variant, the luggage compartment reaches 620 liters, while in the five-door version it offers 380 liters.

The most notable driver assistance and safety systems of the new CUPRA León are adaptive and predictive cruise control, travel assistant, lateral assistant (vehicle warning in the blind spot of the vehicle with detection up to 70 meters), Exit Assist including Rear Traffic Alert when leaving the parking space and door open warning system. Adaptive and predictive cruise control is also available, which locates the vehicle based on the route and GPS data from the navigation system, allowing you to adjust your speed based on the road configuration: bends, roundabouts, intersections, speed limits and built-up areas. And using data from the front camera and traffic sign recognition, the vehicle can automatically adjust speed when limits change. The Travel Assist function uses information from cruise control and lane departure to keep the car actively centered in the lane and adapts speed to the flow of traffic, supporting it while driving.

One of the biggest contributions is the introduction of the emergency response officer. If the driver doesn’t respond, the system can tap the brakes a few times, and if nothing changes, the vehicle can come to a complete stop and activate the hazard lights. Once stopped, the CUPRA León can contact the emergency services directly via the eCall system. If we add to all this the integration of seven standard airbags, including a center front airbag, the result is a vehicle that offers high safety standards. It also has the optional Pro-Pack, which adds rear side airbags, a driver’s knee airbag and the Pre-Crash Assistant, which prepares the vehicle and its occupants for a potential accident. This package also adds the alarm and new Matrix LED headlights. Finally, the CUPRA León can have automatic parking assistance, keyless opening and starting, virtual pedal for automatic boot lid opening (only for the “family” Sports Tourer model), three-zone climate control, heated seats and steering wheel.
