28% of vehicles involved in casualty accidents have a defect

Date:

Vehicles older than 10 years are the ones showing the most deviations, at 67% of the total

Of the total
of 158,492 claims roads with casualties registered in 2021 on both urban and inter-urban roads in Spain, in 28% of cases at least one of the vehicles involved in the accident showed some kind of anomaly in operation.

These defects mainly occurred in old vehicles, as 67% of the defects found were
in vehicles older than 10 yearss, this important factor taking into account that the fleet is 14.6 years old.

These figures, presented by the DGT based on the consolidated data of traffic accidents with casualties on urban and interurban roads in 2021 and analyzed by the Spanish Association of Collaborative Entities of the Administration in the Technical Inspection of Vehicles AECA-ITV, show that the The condition of a vehicle is closely related to its safety.

Of the 103,379 vehicles involved in fatal crashes on urban roads in the past year, in 31,713 of the cases the vehicle had some abnormality; which amounts to 31%.

As soon
to the type of defect detectedshow this data that the most common cases were tire problems and blowouts, steering and braking abnormalities.

By type of vehicle, in the case of passenger cars, 31% of the vehicles involved in crashes with casualties had some anomaly. For their part, 51% of damaged motorcycles had defects, a figure rising to 40% in the case of vans, 36% in trucks and 67% in the case of buses.

Of the 55,113 vehicles involved in casualty accidents on interurban roads in 2021, 13,342 had vehicle defects; which amounts to 24%.

In terms of the type of defect detected, the figures from the DGT show that, similar to the breakdown of vehicles on urban roads, vehicles
they had tire problemswhat is of greater importance is the number of vehicles that experienced tire blowouts as well as deviations in direction and braking.

Regarding the type of vehicle, in the case of passenger cars, 28% of the vehicles involved in casualty accidents on interurban roads showed some anomaly. A figure that reaches 53% in the case of motorcycles, 43% in vans, 40% in trucks and 34% in buses.

“These data demonstrate the more than obvious relationship that exists between the correct operation of vehicle systems and their safety. That is why the ITV is so important, because only technical inspections can detect defects that would otherwise not be known,” he assured.
Guillermo Magazinegeneral manager of AECA-ITV.

This is evident from the study “Contribution of the Technical Inspection of Vehicles to road safety and the environment” of the
Duque de Santomauro Motor Vehicle Safety Institute (ISVA) of the Carlos III University of Madrid, thanks to the technical inspections carried out in the year 2021, at least 15,641 road accidents, 13,110 injuries and 148 deaths have been avoided. In addition, it added that if the vehicles that failed the inspection had done so, an additional 13,517 road accidents, 11,643 injuries and an additional 146 deaths would have been avoided.

From an environmental point of view,
the study proves that ITV stations have avoided 575 premature deaths in the year 2021 due to exposure to particulate matter (PM).
