The solution to an icy windshield is a potato

Although it was an atypical December, with temperatures so high as to break all records, winter is here and in many parts of Spain it is common to see frost on the windshields in the morning.

For the latter, it is essential that the tires are in good condition. Otherwise, they won’t scrape the glass properly and may not remove the ice properly.

One of the most effective ways to prevent windshield icing is to park in the right place: you should avoid wide open spaces where the air can flow unrestrained. It is better to be under trees and near walls.

But this is not always possible.
The starch in a potato serves as a natural moisture repellent.. Rubbing the outside will not prevent an ice layer from forming, but it will make it thinner and more brittle than if it had not been applied. In addition, inside it prevents the windows from fogging up, another common problem in winter.

According to the DGT, the best way to prevent icing is to provide a physical barrier. A piece of cardboard, held by the brushes, can act as an insulator and prevent the formation of a frosted layer. This can cause brushes to stick and damage motors.

It can be tempting to pour hot water on glass, but remember that glass is one of the most sensitive materials to temperature changes and pouring boiling liquid onto an icy surface can result in a glass explosion.

Instead, it is advisable to use the car heater to gradually heat the glass from the inside. It should be done cold and not wait for the engine to warm up first to turn on the heater, precisely to avoid sudden changes in temperature.

There are defrosting products on the market, but one of the most effective is alcohol.
The hydroalcoholic gel allows you to melt the ice quickly, because its freezing temperature is lower than that of water. However, it is only advisable if the ice layer is thin and removed quickly, otherwise it will freeze again.

Finally, the best thing to do if you live in an area where your windshield is often frozen is to invest in a good plastic squeegee. They are not particularly expensive and much more convenient to use than a CD case or credit card.
