This innovative Michelin technology will undergo its first tests in real-world conditions one year ahead of schedule
A fleet of 50 DHL Express vans will be fitted with the Michelin Uptis airless tire for last-mile deliveries in Singapore
before the end of 2023. The pilot program will begin with the first vehicles equipped with this technology going into circulation from January 10. In this way, the Michelin Uptis technology is being tested in real conditions a year ahead of schedule, thanks to the collaboration between Michelin and DHL.
The Michelin Uptis prototype is a puncture-proof rim/tyre set for passenger cars and light vans that uses a revolutionary structure instead of air that can support the vehicle, guaranteeing the robustness of the wheel and ensuring comfort and safety while driving. Designed as a ‘plug and play’ solution, Michelin Uptis allows users to stop worrying about road hazards that can affect tires and reduces the number of tires thrown away due to punctures.
Michelin Uptis also enables DHL to optimize the productivity of its fleet as problems associated with tire pressure loss and punctures are eliminated,
reducing the frequency of its replacement.
“As pioneers in green logistics, we are delighted to be partnering with Michelin to test their airless tires on our vehicles in Singapore. This partnership is another milestone for us as we strive to make our last-mile operations more sustainable and achieve net zero carbon emissions across the entire DHL network worldwide,” he says.

Bruno De FeraudyDirector of OEM activities of the Michelin group, stated that “Michelin Uptis is the result of some fifty patents related to the structure and high-tech materials of the tire, and demonstrates Michelin’s ability to innovate in favor of safer and more sustainable mobility. We are delighted that DHL has trusted Michelin to equip its fleet with the first Michelin Uptis tyres, which were launched a year ahead of schedule.”
Likewise, airless technology is key to Michelin’s vision of a fully sustainable tire by 2050. Currently, 20% of tires are discarded prematurely due to punctures and blowouts (12%) or irregular wear caused by poor pressure (8%). Based on internal research, Michelin predicts that Michelin Uptis airless technology could prevent the premature removal of up to 200 million tires per year worldwide, or
savings of 2 million tons of materialequivalent to about 200 times the weight of the Eiffel Tower.
