The worst numbers since 1993. For example, car registrations in Europe ended last year, totaling 9,255,930 units, a decrease of 4.6%.
This result highlights the seriousness of 2022 for the auto industry, which would have had a much worse outcome had it not been for the second half increase. For instance,
December ended with a 12.8% increase thanks to 896,697 sales. The end of the year saw five consecutive months close in the green, three of them with double-digit gains.
Of the four major current markets,
only Germany managed to close the year on a positive note thanks to a December boom of 38.1%, which the European Association of Manufacturers (ACEA) described as “spectacular”. For example, the year ended at 1.1% for the Germans and negatively for Spain (-5.4%), Italy (-9.7%) and France (-7.8%).
30 years ago, 9.15 million copies were registered, but only taking into account the 14 countries that then formed the European Union, not counting the United Kingdom.
Although 2022 has remained a year to quickly forget in Europe, more so for Spain. The year’s 813,396 registrations represent the third country that lost the most sales. Compared to 2019, the last year before the outbreak of the pandemic, the decrease is 35.4%.
For the Director of the National Manufacturers Association (Anfac),
Jose Lopez-Tafall, «it is true that there are supply problems, but they are common in Europe and do not justify Spain’s differentiated evolution. It is a risky situation for a country where the car industry employs two million people.”
And continued: ”
Getting a positive message back for the car is a priority and that the role of the clean private vehicle is defended. This should be an option, not an obligation, otherwise we will make a mistake as a country and jeopardize an important asset for the national economic health.”
On the podium of the manufacturer, they stood as
champion of the Volkswagen Group (2.3 million), Stellantis (1.8 million) and Renault (984,558).
