The fleet is aging not only in Spain. The whole of Europe is also signing up
an aging fleetdespite the fact that at the same time the number of low-emission plug-in electric cars is increasing.
This has been denounced since the
Automobile Manufacturers AssociationACEA, arguing that, as in the case of vans and lorries, the Euro 7 regulations (stricter than Euro 6 and expected to come into force at the end of this year) will have a “marginal impact” on when it comes to reduce NOx emissions from cars.
According to his statistics, he
cars purchased before 2014 and therefore, prior to the Euro 6 pollutant emissions regulation (which is currently in force), they will account for approximately 60% of the fleet in the European Union by 2025 and 43% of the total nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions in the region.
The organization has advocated renewal of the car fleet in the EU
before Euro 6as it has indicated that it is a measure that will have a greater impact on the reduction of NOx and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions than the introduction of the Euro 7 standard as currently proposed.
According to the environmental organization Transport&Environment, the pollution limits for cars set 15 years ago remain “virtually unchanged, despite technological advances”, which they say is especially problematic for highly toxic nitrogen oxides (NOx) and the particles that kill most from air pollution.
With regard to the future Euro 7 regulation, this organization believes that “without more ambition on key points, the proposal runs the risk of greenwashing
current polluting vehicles such as Euro 7 cleanharming air quality and confusing consumers.” They further argue that “Europe’s electric car boom could come to a halt, jeopardizing sales of 18 million electric vehicles,” the latest report said. of the European Federation for Transport and Environment (T&E).
European clean mobility regulations have boosted sales of plug-in vehicles, which already represent a fifth of the total market. However, the proposed targets for the period 2022 and 2030 are “too weak” according to ecologists. This could lead to
generating another 55 million tons of CO2 pollutionmore than the total annual vehicle emissions in Spain.
In Spain’s case, the automotive sector would barely contribute to the country’s target of reducing emissions by 37.7% by the end of the decade. For this reason, T&E and ECODES state that, if
not set more ambitious targets after 2025 –which should include an intermediate target for 2027 and an 80% reduction in CO2 emissions from vehicles by 2030– Member States will find it very difficult to meet their climate and low-carbon targets for this decade.
