Mitsubishi ASX forces himself to turn to look at it again. It is a new car, from a brand that had vowed to leave Europe, which is identical in silhouette to one of the most common cars in Spain, the Renault Captur. It’s not for nothing that both vehicles are built at Alliance’s plant in Valladolid.
The Japanese car takes up about a fifth of the production volume of the Castilian plant, about 31,000 units per year, 90% of which will be destined for foreign markets and about 3,500 will remain within our borders in 2023.
Inevitably, large auto conglomerates use their synergies to reach more market niches. In the case of Europe, one of the most appreciated is that of compact SUVs in the B segment. In Spain, 28% of registrations fall into this category, which also includes Spanish speakers.
Volkswagen T-Roc (Pamplona),
Seat Aaron (Barcelona) and
Peugeot2008 (Vigo).
One of the strengths of the ASX is that it comes with engines already known on the market,
available with C, Eco or Zero label. At the bottom of the range is a 90PS 1.0-litre petrol engine, followed by a mild-hybrid system with a 140PS 1.3 engine in the manual version and 160PS in the automatic version.
According to the general manager of Mitsubishi Spain, Manuel Salvadores, the sales mix will mainly fall on the mild-hybrid versions (45%), followed by the thermal (25%), the plug-in (20%) and the hybrid conventional (10 %).
Among the hybrid engines, the conventional comes with 145 hp, while the plug-in, with a range of 49 km in zero-emission mode, reaches 160 hp and has the most sought-after DGT label, Cero.
The changes are almost imperceptible on its French cousin, but it will hit the market with exclusive colors for the Japanese brand. The interior space is enough for four adults, although the trunk can be small – it has 422 liters in the conventional model, 305 in the hybrid and 261 in the plug-in.
The trim levels go, from less to more, between Spirit, Motion, Kaiteki and Kaiteki +, only available in the plug-in hybrid version. This is also the only one available with leather seats and also heated seats and steering wheel.
Inside it has all the driving aids you’d expect from a modern car – the Alliance has always shown its Euro NCAP stars – as well as large digital screens, both for instruments and the multimedia system.
Prices start, with introductory discounts applied, from 19,490 euros for the 90 hp engine to 29,390 euros for the plug-in hybrid, applying the Moves plan. The warranty, larger than in the French house, is five years and 100,000 kilometers, which is extended to 8 years and 160,000 km for the PHEV drive battery.
