UN calls on Elon Musk to put human rights at the heart of Twitter’s development

After the resignation of all members of the platform’s management and development team, the international organization asked the businessman to guarantee freedom of expression, protect people’s rights and privacy and not incite discrimination.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has urged Twitter’s new owner Elon Musk to ensure that that human rights are fundamental to the governance and development of the platformafter all team members have been in this area fired after taking office.

Likewise, the United Nations representative has recalled that he has also waived all personnel dedicated to the ethical artificial intelligencewith the exception of two people, who have stressed that “it is not an encouraging start”.

Türk recalled in a letter on Saturday that the businessman has “enormous responsibilities” in this area because of the platform’s “influential role as a digital space”, for which he must understand the harm of the social network and take steps to address it.

He has also appealed to Musk to de freedom of speechavoid reinforcing content that harms rights and privacy from other people, and make sure Twitter does not incite “discrimination, hostility or violence”.

In the letter, he also appreciates the benefits and opportunities of the platform which, he assured, “has much to offer to our common agenda for a common world”although he has pointed out that they need to be clear about the requirements to make it a reality.
