An immunocompromised man in the UK was infected with the Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus for 411 days. Therapy with neutralizing antibodies has now cured him.
The 59-year-old was infected with a previous corona variant that first appeared in Wuhan, China. A kidney transplant leaves the patient with a weakened immune system, according to the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. What ultimately helped him was a combination of antibodies known as Regeneron, which was also administered to then-US President Donald Trump in 2020.
The genetic analysis of the virus was important. With 411 days, the now cured patient is one of the people with one of the longest known corona infections. Another sad record is held by a patient who was also treated at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital. He died after 505 days of infection.
Currently no effective antibody treatment
According to the experts, there is no effective antibody treatment for the currently dominant corona variant Omicron in Great Britain or the European Union.
“Some people with compromised immune systems are still at risk for serious illness and ongoing infection,” says physician Luke Blagdon Snell of King’s College London. He recently published his findings in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases.
