After the release of chlorine gas in the Therme Fügen in the Tyrolean Zillertal, a bather tells the “Krone” what went wrong during the evacuation. One of the directors of the recreation company admitted mistakes in the conversation.
“I was in the water with my daughter when we got a sore throat and noticed the stench,” recalls a Tyrolean who was in the Erlebnistherme with his six-year-old daughter when the chlorine gas leaked. According to Ernst Erlebach, one of the directors, and also according to information from the fire service, the chlorine content in the interior has never been increased.
Only in the outdoor pool
It only came out in an outdoor pool. “So we didn’t exert that much pressure. We knew there was nothing missing in the air, because we were constantly on the road with the measuring device,” explains the director.
“A woman fell in front of us”
Meanwhile, the Tyrolean bather and his daughter queued to leave the pool because the passages were not open initially. “A woman fell right in front of us,” says the 36-year-old. The fire department asked a cashier to let everyone out. “But she said, ‘They have consumed, and you have to pay for it.'”
After the insistence of guests and the fire brigade, the door opened
He “can’t quite imagine it,” commented the head of the thermal baths on this accusation. He explained that turnstiles and barriers only open automatically in the event of a fire. “With chlorine gas you have to do it manually, and we have that too.” The bather also confirms that an employee eventually opened the exit – under great pressure from the bathers and also the fire service.
“It’s also embarrassing and uncomfortable for us”
Many guests then left, but some asked for their money back even though they had to leave, Erlebach says. “And some paid for what they consumed.” The head of the thermal baths admits mistakes were made. “It’s also embarrassing and uncomfortable for us.” He wants to work out the incident. Anyone who was in the bathroom on that day will get their money back.
The chlorine gas escaped because a previously replaced valve in a technical room had a technical defect. Seven people had to be taken to hospital after the incident.
