Until now, and from the age of 65, license renewals are for 5 years, and it becomes two years when they exceed 70
The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) focuses on people over 65 and the renewal of their driving licence. In other words, over 4 million people over that age who hold a driver’s license, meaning:
more than 15% of the driver’s position
Until now, and from the age of 65, the renewal of the driver’s license is for 5 years, and it becomes two years if they are over 70. It is of course always up to the psychotechnicians to be able to further reduce that frequency, who can be annual. And for professional drivers, the renewal of the driving license is in all cases every 5 years and every three from the age of 65.
But this could change. In fact, the agency has announced that it plans to shorten the validity of driver’s licenses for over-65s. In particular the Deputy Director of Education and Road Training of the DGT,
Maria Jose Aparicio, has warned that “30% of road accident fatalities in the European Union are over 65 years of age. A figure that repeats itself in all countries and that reaches 50% when we talk about deceased pedestrians or cyclists. In Spain, in 2019, 28% of those who died in road accidents were over 65 years of age. These figures will rise even further due to the aging population if we do nothing.
For this reason, and with regard to the loss of psychophysical abilities and with the review of the validity of the permits, it has been clarified that they intend to review not only the validity of the permits of the elderly, but all periods of Validity. “We know that we will have to phase out in people of a certain age. We must protect the elderly, but always promote their mobility, safety and freedom,” he added.
On this subject, the General Director of Transport,
Peter Navarrohas spoken and explained “that the deadlines and the psychophysical tests in the renewal of the driver’s license of the elderly will be reviewed”.
It should be noted that the current law on traffic, the movement of motor vehicles and road safety, in Article 13, also confirms itself and tells us that: “the driver must be able to control his vehicle at all times”, but
nothing is said about the maximum age to be allowed to drive There are minimum age restrictions for certain types of driver’s licenses, as well as the age at which the licenses must be renewed in order to continue driving.
