Why an electric scooter can catch fire and how to avoid it?

Date:

Electric scooters have become the great protagonists of urban mobility. In addition to its advantages as a means of transport, some precautions must be taken in its use and maintenance, as they can cause fires due to improper maintenance, shock and high temperatures.

This is mainly due to the fact that they work with Ion-Lithium batteries, with little autonomy and which require continuous charging at home, where these kinds of accidents happen because they can explode.

A fire caused by a lithium-ion battery is characterized by its speed, release of toxic gases and difficulty to extinguish. For this reason, fire protection professionals recommend installing smoke detectors in your home, as many fires start at night, when people are asleep and don’t have the opportunity to respond in time.

For Jaime Ortega, technical director of Iberext, “it is easy to find on social networks a large number of videos of electric scooters exploding in seconds and starting a fire in the house. Although in these cases we recommend that you always have a special portable fire extinguisher with you. to deal with fires caused by lithium batteries, at Iberext we are committed to prevention and awareness, so having at least one smoke or gas detector in your home is crucial. These devices trigger an alarm in the event of a fire that warns of the danger and allows us to respond in a timely manner.

In this situation, it is important to have smoke detection and alarm systems in place, in addition to following a series of recommendations.

Make sure the homologation is in order: The electric scooters that meet the certification standards have tested battery management systems (BMS) that provide all guarantees that at a high temperature the power supply and charging of the vehicle will be interrupted.

Do not leave the scooter charging overnight. During those hours, we were unable to respond if there was a battery failure. In turn, we must disconnect the scooter as soon as it has reached the maximum charge level as the charger reaches high temperatures which can cause overheating of the scooter.

Keep the scooter away from household items. At the time of loading, we should avoid leaving the vehicle near flammable objects or objects that can easily burn, as the fire can quickly spread throughout the house. For this reason, it is important to place the scooter in a ventilated area as far away as possible from habitable parts of the house, such as a patio.

Do not attempt to clean the scooter with pressurized water. Water can enter the battery cells, causing a short circuit. In addition, it is recommended not to charge the scooter when it is wet or damp.

And finally,
avoid charging the scooter after a hit in the battery area. If we observe any damage or defects, we recommend that you take it to a specialized workshop as soon as possible and under no circumstances manipulate any part of the electric scooter
