The deadly pitfall of leaving children and adults in the car in the sun

Date:

Leaving a baby or small child in a car for an hour without refrigeration, with 31 degrees outside, would end their life

In the middle of the day, in two hours, a vehicle in the sun can reach almost 60°C, outside 32 degrees, a difference of +26°C inside the car. for this
days of extreme heat, you have to be very careful

Leaving a baby or small child in a car for an hour with no refrigeration, with 31 degrees outside, while we do our shopping, would end their life as the child would get heat stroke in a car that has reached almost 50 degrees. The situation could be more dramatic amid the heat wave hitting Spain this week, with locations exceeding 40 degrees. A situation that can
have serious consequences if we leave an older person

“Hyperthermia of more than 40 degrees of environmental origin causes progressive damage to many organs: musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, renal, lung, neurological … leading to the death of the child, as temperatures above 42 degrees lead to cell death he warns.
Jose Maria Arevalo The Street, president of the Spanish Society for Critical Patient Care (SEAPC). “Small children are very sensitive to high temperatures because of their immaturity because they do not yet have well-developed thermoregulation,” says the SEAPC doctor.

This independent non-profit scientific association and the manufacturer RiveKids, a technology company focused on the road safety of children, conducted a practical simulation, based on four different scenarios, to measure the internal temperature reached by a vehicle and the associated risks as variables. : the temperature, the spaces in the vehicle, the hours of the day and the exposure time.

In the study,
recreated four common situations in the life of many families in Spain:

– Simulates a situation where an adult leaves the car on the street and in the sun to go to work between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM; and that last hour was recorded 65º in some parts of the front part of the vehicle.

-A scenario of a vehicle on the street for two hours, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., where various tasks and errands can be done, when the outside temperature goes from 22°C to 32°C degrees.

-Car in the sun at the central hours of the day, from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm, and the temperature inside rises much faster.

– Case 4. Car in the sun between 2 pm and 5 pm, with a milder outside temperature, between 21 and 24 degrees, but inside we see how in just 1 hour the temperature rises 17 degrees to 41 ° C, and after 3 hours it is set the vehicle to 50 °C.

When we get heat stroke, what happens to us is that our natural ability to maintain a normal temperature is overwhelmed. It’s like our “internal thermostat is broken”. In this situation of hyperthermia, which can exceed 42 degrees, the human body can develop neurological symptoms with seizures, coma and even death.

If we find a child in a similar situation in a vehicle in the sun, we must first alert the emergency services and follow the instructions they give us. It is important to take it out immediately and try to lower the temperature:

-We will put you in a cool place and take off your clothes.

-If possible, we apply fresh compresses.

-We can spray the body with water and fan it out to cause evaporation.

-If he’s conscious, give him water.

-Transfer the child to a health center to continue treatment.
