The new Cupra Formentor with 390 hp, comparable to the best high-performance SUVs from premium brands

The Formentor is the first vehicle designed and developed exclusively by the Cupra sports brand. The introduction to the range of the new VZ5 version pushes its limits one step further, for sports enthusiasts. With its 390 hp five-cylinder engine, much improved dynamics (it looks and behaves like a racing car) thanks to its advanced chassis technology and a very exclusive on-board experience.

The 2.5-litre TSI five-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine delivers 390 hp and 480 Nm of torque, and offers maximum emotion behind the wheel, thanks to the 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission, which reaches the rev limit without shifting and with full throttle, that uses LED diodes to indicate the change of speed, of the 4 Drive four-wheel drive and of the electronic rear differential lock with «Torque Splitter» technology, which even includes a “Drift” mode to enjoy controlled and continuous drifts in closed roads or circuits.

The “Torque Splitter” technology on the rear wheels is an engine sharing system with two independent clutches with electro-hydraulic actuation. Its mission is to distribute the power of the engine to the cornering aids, not only between the front and rear axles, but also between the wheels of the rear axle, giving the Formentor VZ5 even more maneuverability in the most demanding conditions. The five different driving modes – Comfort, Sport, Cupra, Individual and Offroad – allow the driver to adapt the dynamic behavior of the vehicle to his needs, via the screen or via the satellite button on the steering wheel.

In addition to the driving profiles present in the Formentor range, a sixth driving profile exclusive to the Cupra Formentor VZ5 has been added: Drift Mode. This allows the driver to make controlled oversteer on the track. When the drift mode is activated, torque is delivered to the rear axle and the ESC stability control is completely deactivated, changing the behavior of the engine and transmission. Up to 100% of the torque on the rear axle is sent to the wheel taking the outermost path of the turn until it oversteers. When Drift mode is activated from the infotainment screen, the driver receives a warning message.

The VZ5 version of the Cupra Formentor reaches 100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds and reaches a top speed of 250 km/h (self-limiting). With these figures, emotions at the wheel are guaranteed. The Cupra Formentor VZ5 allows the DSG to be used in manual mode, reaching the cut-off without changing gears. This mode takes advantage of the shift indicator light, which uses green, orange, and red LED diodes. When gear transitions are performed in manual mode, the cutoff can be reached by holding the gear and flashing red when approaching 7,000 rpm. The Cupra Formentor VZ5 pushes sporty behavior to the extreme, while offering great exclusivity thanks to production limited to 7,000 units.

The combination of the TSI engine with the DCC adaptive chassis control – which varies the firmness of the dampers -, the different driving modes with the Cupra Drive Profile selector, the progressive steering, the fast seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission, and the four-wheel drive results in a vehicle in which dynamics, emotion and performance are guaranteed. The “Torque Splitter” technology for selective torque control of the engine makes it possible to distribute torque between the front and rear axles to optimize traction. But it goes one step further, as it also allows the division between the left and right wheels of the rear axle, maximizing stability in the most demanding conditions.

As if that weren’t enough, the Formentor VZ5 adds an exclusive exhaust system that produces a spectacular sound, a braking system with six-piston Akebono calipers on the front wheels, accompanied by larger ventilated and perforated discs (375×36 mm), exclusive 20-inch wheels and a ground clearance of the body 10 mm lower, remaining at 15.8 cm. The exterior design reflects the technological character of the car. Here it is more aggressive with the application of carbon fiber details, in Cupra copper color, and with an exclusive exhaust system with two twin vertically positioned mufflers.

The interior offers modernity, with elements such as the Cupra steering wheel with buttons, the 10.25-inch digital instrument panel, which contains LED diodes that indicate that the DSG should be shifted into manual mode; the information system with a 12-inch screen and the various connectivity solutions. It also includes the wireless Full Link system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the Cupra Connect application, inductive charging, gesture control and speech recognition by natural commands. The system includes 3D online navigation, natural speech recognition and gesture control. With wireless connectivity, you can import contact lists, music, podcasts, or navigation maps. The inductive charging system for mobile devices has four USB-C ports (two on the front and two on the back) and Bluetooth. The finishing touch is provided by the new CUP Bucket sports seats in leather with a carbon fiber rear shell, which offer great support to the body and shoulders while being extremely comfortable.

The range of safety and comfort technologies available in the Cupra Formentor VZ5 make this vehicle one of the safest in the segment. Among others, the adaptive cruise assistant (ACC) and predictive, the trip assistant, the lateral and involuntary lane departure assistant and the emergency assistant stand out. The ACC Predictive Speed Control Assistant positions the Formentor VZ5 using the GPS of the navigation system, allowing it to correct its speed based on the road layout, taking into account curves, roundabouts, intersections, speed limits and built-up areas. The system can adjust the speed of the vehicle when the limits change thanks to the information collected by the front camera and the recognition of road signs. The trip assistant uses information from the ACC, the side assist and the “Lane Assist” system, enabling semi-autonomous driving at level 2, which can be switched off.
