The new generation arrives in Spain with plug-in hybrid versions and Mild Hybrid diesel, from 102,700 euros
Since 2005, when the first generation was launched, Range Rover Sport has become an iconic model, representing modern luxury as a concept, with a design based on lines that never go out of style and endure over time. , while maintaining good dimensions and characteristics to enter hostile terrain far from the roads and enjoy greater comfort and dynamism while driving on the highway.
These are values that the British brand wants to maintain in the new generation that is now entering the market. The model is supported by more than 1 million units sold worldwide, adding the first and second generations of 2014 that have survived to this day. According to Felix Olarrieta, marketing director of the company in Spain, 34% of current sales correspond to plug-in hybrid models (PHEV), and 60% are mild hybrid vehicles or Mild Hybrid (MHEV), so 95% of the units are somehow electrified.
The car is intended for “a customer who is very loyal to the make and model, because as the versions change, there are those who are looking for something new”. And before them comes the new generation of a large vehicle, with 4×4 traction and good driving dynamics, with technology applied to design and with a high level of connectivity.
The new Range Rover Sport is mounted on a multi-material chassis, achieving 35% more rigidity than the current model. It also has dynamic air suspension, which promises to reduce pitching and rolling while driving. This dynamic dual-valve air suspension is available for the first time on a Range Rover, and active dual-valve dampers offer new levels of agility, control and balance.
And it also has a dynamic mode to adapt the driving to the driver’s preferences, who can even choose the type of engine sound. With the ‘Stormer Handling Pack’ we have a system that combines four-wheel steering, Dynamic Response Pro, electronic active differential with torque distribution in corners through braking and configurable programs.
As for its virtues as a 4X4, in addition to being able to control its distance from the ground by the above-mentioned air suspension, it is able to overcome slopes of 45 degrees, with a wading depth of almost 1 meter, 35 degrees attack and 30 degrees exit .
The mechanical offer arriving in Spain includes a 510 hp PHEV plug-in hybrid variant, a total real-life autonomy of 740 km and CO2 emissions from 18 g/km. This version has a range in electric mode of 113 km, and can recover 80% of the battery in a DC fast charger up to 50 kW of power in 1 hour. If we charge it in a 7.2 kW household plug, the total charging time is about 5 hours.
It is also available with a 48V six-cylinder Ingenium micro-hybrid diesel engine with outputs of 250 and 300 hp, and a petrol version with a new 530 hp twin turbo V8 engine to deliver the signature Range Rover Sport performance. The 100% electric propulsion option will be available in 2024.
As for the technological features, at first glance one can distinguish a floating 13.1-inch Pivi Pro touchscreen, combined with a 13.7-inch interactive screen and Amazon’s Alexa voice artificial intelligence. The appearance, as in the whole car, is elegant and luxurious. As a curiosity and to ensure the best interior comfort, it has four external microphones that neutralize engine and road noise through loudspeakers in the headrests. It has an advanced air purification system and a Meridian audio system with 29 speakers.
