Throughout his life, Eduardo Barreiros (Nogueira de Ramuín, Orense province, October 24, 1919) starred in a series of milestones that show that he was ahead of his time and the father of the car industry in Spain.

TRANSFORMATION FROM PETROL ENGINES TO DIESEL

In 1949, in the workshop of Orense, the transformation from petrol to diesel engines began to meet the needs of the vehicles used in the works of the contractors of the company BECOSA (Barreiros Empresa Constructora SA).

Converts two German Krupp truck engines from petrol to diesel and approximately 2,000 units of Russian 3HC trucks. The converted Russian engine was called the EB-1. In 1950 he used 7 converted trucks in his factory and paid 1.80 pesetas per liter of diesel, compared to 6.25 peseta per liter of petrol.

In 1951, he patented the transformation of engines for which he charged between 40,000 and 65,000 pesetas compared to the 135,000 pesetas costed by the Perkins Diesel P-6 engine.

The EB 6 engine

In 1954 he founded Barreiros Diesel with a capital of 10 million pesetas. It produces the EB-6 Barreiros technology engine, the first mass-produced engine at Barreiros Diesel, with an average production of three units per day (for application in trucks from 5 to 7 MT). In 1958 it was mounted in Poland and Spain on the Star 21 trucks and in 1959 on the Barreiros TT90-21 and TT 90-22. Later in the Saeta 65.

military truck

In 1957, the Ministry of Defense of the Government of Portugal announces an international competition for the manufacture of 300 military terrain vehicles for its army. Eduardo Barreiros comes with a prototype of a TT 90 22 military truck, known to the factory workers as “El Abuelo”, with a Barreiros EB6 engine, and wins the competition in competition with English, American and French companies such as Mercedes, ACLO and Bedford , after some very tough tests in which, as usual, he was driven by Eduardo Barreiros himself. The wide tires, named “Lipsoyds” after their inventor Herr Starussler, anticipated the current “all-traction” tires for more than a decade.

The Barreiros tractor

In 1958 it managed to obtain the license to produce 3,000 tractors annually, becoming Rheinsthal-Hanomag Barreiros in 1959. Barreiros produced over 80,000 tractors, quite a few of which are still engaged in agricultural duties, with the Barreiros 7000 being the latest model to hit the market. Barreiros tractors had chrome liners on their engines and they never wore out. The tractors were able to work for up to 30,000 hours without repair.

Hawk and Super Hawk

In 1961, the Goshawk and the Super Goshawk appeared. The Super Azor or “Great Route” was the most famous truck in Barreiros, the pride of the Galician fishmongers.

1966 The Saeta series of trucks appeared, a light truck with technology and a price very adapted to the needs of the Spanish market, with three frame lengths and a payload that varied from 1,800 kg for the 15 model to 7,525 kg for the 75 -fashion model.

They are already equipped with the panoramic cabin, all metal, with great visibility and comfort and with a capacity for three people.

Dodge and Simca

In 1963 he reached an agreement whereby he transferred 40% of Barreiros Diesel to its affiliate Chrysler Corporation and established Barreiros Chrysler to produce the Dodge and Simca brands.

In 1965 1,200 Dodge Darts went on sale (price 240,000 pesetas ex works for the standard model) and until 1977 a total of 27,548 were produced. They were petrol vehicles. There was also a diesel version which was much appreciated by taxi drivers. The first 60 Dodge Darts were intended for senior government officials, including government ministers, who switched from using Cadillac-branded vehicles to using domestically produced Dodge Darts.

The Dodge Dart Range 1 model was produced from July 1965 to January 1966 and featured a distinctive front with rounded headlamps, with rounded edges separated from the radiator grille. The components of this range came almost entirely from the United States. The Dodge Dart Gama 2 was produced from January 1966 to November 1968 and is entirely made in Spain, except for body panels and carburettor. Rectangular front with round headlights with a square frame and chrome and incorporated into the general line of the grille.

The Gama 3 or Gama del 69 was produced from 1968 to 1971. This series had a unique Spanish design. The most characteristic was the front with rectangular headlights.

The Simca 1000 had an excellent reception to celebrate the one hundred thousand unit output in 1968, competing in the market with the SEAT 600, highlighting the Simca for its high performance.

The CP 67 Cabin

In 1965 the need arose to renew the outdated design of the Panoramic Cab, of which 100,000 units were semi-artisanal and expensive. Introduced in 1969, the CP 67 panoramic cab was the first series of self-assembled cab with the best national design of the time, used in all Barreiros, Barreiros Chrysler, Chrysler Dodge and Renault vehicles from 1969 to 1986-87.

export

It was a success to export the engines and vehicles produced in Barreiros Diesel -buses, trucks- to Egypt, Colombia, Brazil, Chile, Angola, Mozambique, Saudi Arabia, Portugal, India, the Philippines… up to 27 countries, since then it represented an important currency for our country in the 1950s and 1960s. However, one of the reasons for the disagreement with Chrysler was that they did not live up to the commitment to put their commercial network at the service of Barreiros in all countries present , for the sale of all Barreiros vehicles
