First of all, traffic jams in the summer months are more common than expected, and even when the route has been mapped out, breakdowns or unexpected accidents can already cause traffic jams. In view of this situation, the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) always recommends maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle in front at all times to avoid overtaking when braking abruptly. If it is necessary to stop, it is better to do so where the wheels of the vehicle in front are still visible; and constantly looking in the rear-view mirrors in case a car tries to merge into a different lane or a motorcycle accelerates too close. Failure to keep a distance is punished with 500 euros and the withdrawal of 6 points from the driver’s license.

If the unforeseen happens to you and you are forced to stop the vehicle, pull it off the road, activate the emergency lights and call emergency services and wait to avoid being run over or taking unnecessary risks.

Likewise, in the summer, you need to be extra careful with glare during sunrise and sunset. Therefore, the DGT recommends the use of sunglasses as a “protection barrier”, taking into account the degree of absorption of ultraviolet and infrared rays and protection against flashes due to reflections.

All vehicle occupants must wear a seat belt, whether on urban or interurban roads, and persons under the age of 12 must ride in an approved device adapted to their size and weight. Given the latter, unless their height is equal to or greater than 135 centimeters, they can use the adult seat belt. Not using these elements or using them incorrectly presupposes a serious violation and results in a fine of 200 euros, in addition to 4 points less in the permit.

Luggage should preferably be placed in the trunk. If it doesn’t fit, it can be carried on the roof rack or on a trailer. Only in extreme cases, according to the DGT, it is placed in the passenger compartment, but without obscuring the driver’s view, and securely fastened. Remember that without being tied up or in the backseat, for example, will be a fine of 200 euros.

Carry the position triangles or the V16 light and the reflective vest, as well as the first aid kit. Likewise, rest every two hours or about every 200 or 300 miles traveled.

Inquire about the condition of the roads or traffic and make sure that the car papers are in order; and if the journey is through Europe, please refer to the traffic regulations of each country.

Avoid inappropriate clothing and footwear such as sandals or heels. Abundant meals, alcoholic drinks are also discouraged; and drugs that are contraindicated when driving.

Check the washer fluid and wipers, that the turn signals are in good condition and adjusted, and also that the air conditioning is working properly and making no noise.

Please check that everything is in order before starting the journey. It is important to check the condition of the battery, wheels, brakes and that the engine is perfectly lubricated.

With children, it is advisable to bring games to brighten up your trip, plan breaks and make sure they are fastened or in their child seat.
