A common type of footwear in summer that can pose a risk while driving
When driving a car, many doubts arise, practical actions, which are not taught in the driving school. One is whether you can ride in flip flops, a shoe you see a lot in the summer to better deal with the heat. An act that may not seem dangerous, but can cause an accident.
The Directorate-General for Traffic does not take a clear position on whether or not to ban certain activities, such as driving with flip-flops or without a shirt, as they are not in themselves actions that could pose a risk to safety.
According to the DGT, in the General Traffic Regulations there is an article that defines these cases: Article 18.1 explains that “the driver of a vehicle is obliged to maintain his own freedom of movement, the necessary field of view and permanent attention when driving”. It can be understood from this section of the law that, although driving with flip flops is not prohibited, they cannot be used if they impede the driver’s freedom of movement. In this case, using this shoe may cause it to remain under the brake pedal and not be able to be fully depressed. It can also be dangerous because it is not tight on the foot, it can come loose with movement or get stuck, causing an accident. The Guardia Civil explained through its social networks that driving with flip flops can be a reason for a sanction.
While wearing it while driving is not a hazard in itself, authorities may proceed to report the facts if they find it is a dangerous position that affects driving. So it also depends on the type of footwear used, as there may be models that do not affect the control of the vehicle and do not pose a hazard.
