“Security problem” – Ukraine starts exporting electricity to the EU

Date:

According to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukraine has started exporting electricity to the EU. “An important phase in our rapprochement with the European Union has been reached,” Zelenskyy said in a video message on Thursday evening. Ukraine “has started to significantly export electricity to the territory of the EU via Romania”. This is just the first phase. We are preparing an increase in deliveries.”

“Ukrainian electricity could replace a significant portion of the Russian gas consumed by Europeans,” the president said. “It’s not just about export revenue for us, it’s a matter of security for all of Europe.”

Connected to the European electricity grid
Ukraine was connected to the European electricity grid in mid-March. Before the Russian war of aggression against the country started on February 24, the Ukrainian network was synchronized with the Russian network.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wrote on Twitter on Thursday that Ukraine may now export electricity to the EU market. “It will provide the EU with an additional energy source. And the much-needed revenue of Ukraine. That is why we both benefit.”

Nuclear Power Supply Offered
Last week, Ukraine’s Energy Minister, German Galushenko, offered to supply nuclear power to Germany. For example, he wrote in a guest article for the “Wirtschaftswoche” that “a sort of insurance cushion may arise in times of weather-related declining generation of solar and wind power plants”.

Germany and Ukraine could benefit from the different time and climate zones. Nuclear power accounts for more than 50 percent of Ukraine’s electricity production.
