Traveling by car with your cat: these are the recommendations of the DGT

Date:

If you do not transport your pet correctly in the vehicle, you can be fined up to 500 euros

With the summer holidays approaching and the departure operation underway, it is important to follow the recommendations of the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) before taking the car so as not to spoil your journey to your destination. If your pet also accompanies you on this journey, many doubts arise about how your cat or dog should travel in the vehicle so that it does not pose a risk while driving.

To travel safely in the car, users have basic elements such as a seat belt or a seat for the little ones. Well, your pet also needs to be properly secured. In addition, Traffic can impose fines of 80 euros to 500 euros if you do not have it with you properly. These are the DGT’s rules and recommendations if your cat also travels in the car.

– To transport it, it is mandatory to always do this together with the accompanying documentation: the current official health card approved by a veterinarian. If your destination is a European Union country, it is also necessary not to forget your pet passport. In addition, it is useful to take a microchip with you if you lose it.

– Do not carry cats in the arms or on top of one of the passengers

– Traffic points out that animals entering the car must be properly restrained. To do this, a barrier can be included between the driver and your pet so that it does not interfere with driving.

– To protect both the animal and the rest of the passengers in the event of sudden braking or an accident, the DGT recommends the use of retention systems. Carriers are more suitable for cats, they should be on the floor or in the trunk, but harnesses or grids can also be purchased if they are going to be moved in the trunk.
