How to cope with the operation after the summer and avoid crazy gas consumption?

Date:

Some tricks are driving in high gears and putting the car in neutral during long retentions.

The summer outing is characterized by kilometers of caravans on the main roads in Spain, large traffic jams forcing the driver to spend more time behind the wheel, subject to a changing rhythm of the march depending on the influx of vehicles and exposed to the continuous solar radiation. This situation causes stress, fatigue and higher than normal fuel consumption.

Plenoil, an automatic filling station company, has decided to prepare a series of recommendations for the start-up operation in 2022 with the aim of raising awareness about the importance of taking measures to ensure safety and efficiency while driving.

First of all, the service station network wanted to focus on savings and good practices in order to cope with a context characterized by rising fuel prices. So to ensure a smooth and comfortable journey, without unnecessary diversions, it is recommended to find the nearest gas stations.

In order to drive efficiently, it is essential to maintain a steady speed during the journey, in addition to driving as long as possible at high gears or not exceeding 120 km/h, the legal maximum speed.

On the other hand, it is recommended to use the engine brake, that is, reduce the gears so that the car slows down gradually, it will also prevent the consumption of gasoline or diesel fuel from increasing, while at the same time protecting the brake pads, brake and discs. In addition, it recommends putting the car in neutral during long stops, as this prevents wear on the clutch bearing. If it’s going slow, it’s best to move forward with the clutch instead of pressing the accelerator.

Checking the tires properly is another action that can help reduce fuel consumption. These should be inflated to the pressure specified by the manufacturer and depending on the weather conditions, as driving with a tire pressure 0.5 bar lower than the correct one will increase consumption by 2% in urban areas and 4% in inter-urban areas. In this regard, it should be noted that the pressure must be adapted to the load on the car, and the best way to save is to rationalize the weight, since driving with 100 extra kilograms will increase consumption by up to 6% .

The gas station network also warns that the worst travel times are 4pm to 10pm on Fridays, 9am to 1pm on Saturdays and 7pm to 12pm on Sundays.

Plenoil would like to remind us of the importance of taking care of postural hygiene, a defining element when it comes to relieving tension and reducing fatigue while travelling. Among the good habits drivers should adopt in this regard are the following:

– Install the seat belt correctly and adjust the mirrors.

– Adjust the seat: tilt the backrest slightly so that the seat tilts between 15 and 25 degrees, so that the thigh and hips form an arc of 110 to 120 degrees.

– Adjust the headrest: the middle part should be at the level of the ears.

– Keep your arms on the wheel: It is advisable to form the ‘ten past ten’ position, imagining a clock face.

– Finally, the network of automatic filling stations advises you to rest for 20 minutes every two hours of driving or every 200 kilometers, a measure that ensures that drivers have a safe ride.
