Sunak and Mordaunt favorites to succeed Johnson

The former head of economy and the secretary of state for commerce have received 101 and 83 support respectively. In the race to succeed Johnson, only five of the eight candidates the Conservatives voted for will go through.

Former British Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak and the Secretary of State for Trade Penny Mordaunt they have established themselves as favored candidates to succeed Boris Johnson as head of the Conservative Party.

Both received 101 and 83 support respectively in the second vote that took place this Thursday to choose Johnson’s successor.

Sunak and Mordaunt have managed to increase support among their party colleagues, as they received 88 and 67 respectively in Wednesday’s vote.

In Wednesday’s vote, eight candidates came to the first ballot. Of those eight candidates, six received at least 30 Conservative support, and those six are those who re-surrendered in the party elections on Thursday.

In the race to become party leader, state attorney general Suella Braverman has been eliminated as she received 27 support.

Therefore, Here are the candidates still in the running:

– Rishi Sunak, former economy minister

– Penny Mordaunt, Secretary of State for Commerce

– Kemi Badenoch, former Secretary of State for Equality

– Liz Truss, Secretary of State

– Tom Tugendhat, Chairman of Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee
