Please note that traveling by car with a 5 kg dog is not the same as traveling with a 12 kg dog. Their needs and protective measures are not the same
There are many families traveling with their dogs this summer and it is important to do so properly, both for the protection of the animal and for the safety of the passengers. Especially since it is not the same to travel with a 5 kg dog in the car than with a 12 kg dog. Their needs and protective measures are not the same. In addition, in the event of sudden braking or an accident, a poorly secured dog could be ejected from the passenger compartment, multiplying its weight by its speed.
For example, in a 50 km/h accident, a 20 kg dog would hit the passengers as if its actual weight were 700 kg. If the pet is not properly restrained, this impact can have serious consequences for the occupants, in addition to the terrible injuries the pet would suffer.
It should be added that:
it is something obligatory. The Traffic Regulations state that the driver must pay special attention to maintaining the correct position and that the rest of the passengers must maintain it, and to the correct positioning of the objects or animals being transported so that there is no interference between the driver and one of them. Therefore, they should never travel loose or in the arms. The
fines are 80 euros when they go loose, and
between 200 and 500 eurosplus the removal of six points from the driver’s license, when they take up the driver’s space.
For this reason, Norauto describes the safest way to travel based on size:
Small and medium dogs:
– Harness with belt that attaches to the vehicle’s seat belt: it is recommended to have it with two hooks to avoid possible breakage in case of sudden braking or a collision. The rope should be shortened as much as possible to avoid hitting passengers.
-In luggage carrier: The safest option is to place it on the floor of the vehicle as it fits very well between both seats. Another option is to place the carrier with the seat belt, although this is less secure than the first option.
Large dogs:
-Larger size carrier that is placed in the trunk transversely to the direction of travel. If there is no physical separation between the trunk and the occupants, the carrier must be supplemented with a dividing grille.
-Another option for transporting dogs, especially hunting dogs, is to use a trailer. Many are prepared for winter and summer outings.
