This is Hyundai’s flying prototype for urban mobility

The Group is leveraging its capabilities to develop a family of electric aircraft

Supernal has unveiled its first eVTOL vehicle cabin concept at the Farnborough International Airshow, offering a first glimpse of Hyundai Motor Group’s approach to the Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) market.

Supernal’s five-person cabin concept demonstrates how the company uses automotive design processes and materials – while meeting the highest commercial aviation safety standards – to optimize the AAM passenger experience and its price. The design embodies the philosophy of biomimicry – a butterfly in this case – and the company’s pillars: safety above all else, people-oriented design and environmental responsibility.

The team of engineers and designers used the automotive industry’s step-by-step design approach to create the lightweight interior, which is made from forged carbon fiber. Ergonomically shaped seats provide a cocoon-like environment for passengers. The fold-down seat consoles mimic a car’s center consoles and provide a charging station and storage area for personal items. Integrated grab handles on the cab doors and backrests help to get in and out. A combination of lights – including overhead lights inspired by car sunroofs – adapts to different phases of flight to mimic a “light therapy” effect. The cabin layout is inspired by automotive space innovation, with a minimized bulkhead, allowing generous headroom and package features.

With sustainability as a priority, the cabin concept includes materials such as advanced thermoplastic reinforced with recyclable carbon fiber, sustainable vegetable leather, recycled plastic fabric and responsibly sourced wood. The seat shell also uses raw materials left over from the hull manufacturing process.

Complementing Supernal’s battery-powered eVTOL vehicle designed for intra-city passenger transport from 2028, the Group’s Korea-based division (the division) focused on regional air mobility is developing a medium-sized hydrogen-powered for regional – city – to-city – freight and passenger transport. The division plans to commission its hydrogen vehicle in the 2030s.
