The attack took place during evening prayers in the Afghan capital
A massive explosion hit a mosque in Kabul during evening prayers on Wednesday, witnesses and police said, and many people are feared dead or injured. The Al Jazeera network said at least 20 people had died, citing an unnamed official.
Police said there were several victims, but not how many. A Taliban intelligence official told Reuters that as many as 35 people may have been injured or killed, and the death toll could rise. The Kabul Emergency Hospital said on Twitter that it had received 27 patients injured in the explosion, including a seven-year-old boy.
Witnesses told Reuters the powerful blast was heard in a northern neighborhood of Kabul, shattering the windows of nearby buildings. Ambulances went to the scene.
“There has been an explosion in a mosque…the explosion has caused casualties, but the numbers are not yet clear,” Kabul police spokesman Khalid Zadran told Reuters.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the Taliban intelligence official said the blast happened at a mosque among worshipers in the Khair Khana area of Kabul.
The mosque’s imam was among the dead and the number of victims could rise, the source added. Intelligence teams were at the scene of the explosion and the investigation was underway.
Other Taliban government officials did not respond to multiple requests to confirm the number of victims.
