Thousands without electricity – hailstorm in Corsica claims three lives

Three people have died in severe storms on the French Mediterranean island of Corsica. A 13-year-old girl was hit by a tree at a campground in Sagone, on the island’s west coast. A 72-year-old woman died on a beach south of Sagone after the roof of a beach hut fell on her vehicle. French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin also wrote of a third death.

According to the French news agency AFP, it was a 46-year-old man.

Darmanin wanted to travel to the island in the afternoon.

Wind gusts with a speed of more than 200 kilometers per hour have passed over Corsica.

According to the prefecture, the storms in the south of the island injured 12 people, one of them seriously. 45,000 households were without power on the island.

There were also severe storms in other parts of France. Streets in Marseille and nearby Cassis were flooded late Wednesday.
