Workers of Madres Mercedarias lock up in Llodio Church due to closure of Orozko center

The joint residence of Madres Mercedarias, located in the Ibarra de Orozko district, is in danger of closing. In it, 43 employees care for 63 women with an intellectual disability. Faced with the threat of closure, he asks the Diputación to take charge of the situation.

The workers of the Mercedarian Mothers residence they have busy this Sunday the church of Llodio (Álava) with the aim of denouncing the threat of closure of the center of Ibarra.

As they have sued, the residence of Madres Mercedarias, located in the Ibarra de Orozko district, is located in danger of closure and they are in total 116 employees and users those who are “in danger of being left on the street” and have therefore decided to carry out this protest action.

The workers have explained that during the confinement they plan to hold several lectures, as well as round tables in the same church, outside of which they have placed a banner reading “Madres Mercedarias ez Itxi (Mercedarian Mothers Don’t Close)”.

Countless people have entered the church amid cries of protest, where they have also accepted a banner against the closure and demanding solutions from the Diputación.

Close danger

The residential scepter of Madres Mercedarias de Ibarra in Orozko, a joint center of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, is in danger of closing. It is a center whose users are more than 60 women with intellectual disabilities and are currently cared for by 43 employees.

The Congregation of Mercedarian Mothers plans to shut down the service and, according to unions LAB and ESK, the center will close if no one takes charge. The workers have been complaining about their situation and working conditions for several months.

As indicated in a statement, the employees have a basic salary of 990 euros, frozen since 2019, the year in which their working hours were also increased, without an increase in salary.

For all these reasons, they are urging the Provincial Council of Bizkaia to take charge of the situation to avoid closure. According to the union committee, the reaction of the foral institution is “heartbreaking” and the bottom line is that, according to what they say, the Provincial Council is not committed to keeping the center open. The alternative of taking the women to other centers would be considered, which the workers said would mean “very serious and in some cases irreparable damage to their lives”. They explain that many of them spend more than half their lives in this center.
