A young Styrian caused a car accident after a party with 1.5 per mille – a 17-year-old girl died. On Thursday, the alcohol driver was in court in Graz. The previously completely unremarkable man was given a (not legally binding) prison sentence.
A happy birthday party in Gratwein-Straßengel (Graz region) ended in incredible drama at the beginning of May: a 21-year-old got behind the wheel with 1.5 per mille alcohol in his blood, built an accident – and thus killed the life of a 17-year-old year old out.
On Thursday, the alcohol driver stood before a court in Graz for death by gross negligence and by negligent bodily harm. Until that ominous night, the young man was something of a model citizen: hard worker, active in the volunteer fire department, clean criminal record – not a single administrative fine.
Eight to ten bottles of beer empty
But one bad decision would change everything. It had actually been agreed that the suspect would stay with the hostess. When he’d already drunk eight to 10 bottles of Desperados beer, the 21-year-old may have agreed to drive an acquaintance and his girlfriend home because the couple had been arguing.
Lost control on a wet road
“I don’t remember why I got in the car,” the Styrian explained to the judge in annoyance. He can only remember losing control of the car on a bend on the rain-soaked road and hitting some trees. “I just noticed there was a splash.”
He was able to free the seriously injured passenger from the wreckage, the girl was trapped in the back seat. The driver of the accident ran to a settlement to get help. In vain: the young Styrian died.
Judge Barbara Schwarz emphasized the accused’s “extremely positive Nachat behavior”. For example, it is more common for alcoholics to flee to get sober. The 21-year-old admitted his “big mistake” without apology. No final sentence: 18 months in prison, six of which are unconditional. The judge advised him to request an anklet.
