Brazil’s far-right president, Jair Bolsonaro, who recently launched his election campaign, took selfies with supporters outside the presidential residence in the capital Brasilia on Thursday. But there was also a YouTuber who provoked and insulted him, whereupon Bolsonaro burst his collar: he attacked the young man. A video shows the incident (see above).
The YouTuber, named Wilker Leão, filmed himself with critical questions to the head of state. A person not seen in the footage then threw Leão to the ground, whereupon the YouTuber shouted a series of swear words such as “coward” and “wanderer” at the president.
“Don’t film”
Bolsonaro, who had already got into his car, got out again, ran to Leão saying “come here, I want to talk to you”, tried to grab his cell phone, grabbed his shirt and then grabbed his arm with both hands. Guards quickly intervened and led Leão away. “Do not film, do not film,” Bolsonaro tells his supporters in the video published by the news portal “G1”.
Minutes later, the opponents – separated from bodyguards – had a short conversation. “You can talk to me as much as you want, no problem, but why be so aggressive?” asked Bolsonaro. Critic’s response: When he tried to speak politely, he was refused entry.
Violent President
Bolsonaro has already proven in previous disputes, often with the press, that he is not a prude. In 2020, he told a journalist: “I want to punch you in the face”, and once hinted that he would like to shoot supporters of the rival Labor party.
Bolsonaro and his challenger Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva officially kicked off their October presidential campaign on Tuesday. Polls clearly put leftist ex-president Lula ahead of the incumbent.
Bolsonaro in poll behind
In a new survey by opinion polling institute Datafolha, 76-year-old Lula comes at 47 percent, 67-year-old Bolsonaro at 32 percent. The right-wing president narrowed the gap with his challenger by three points from the previous month. If none of the candidates win more than 50 percent of the vote in the first ballot on October 2, a second round will take place on October 30.
