Unbelievably tragic alpine accident on Thursday afternoon on the Zettenkaiser in Tyrol’s Unterland: a 49-year-old German was killed by a broken rock slab while mountain climbing, while his family was waiting for him in the valley. The man’s body was found during a search.
The 49-year-old had reported to his family in the early afternoon. He told her that he was descended from the Zettenkaiser. In addition, a meeting place on the Hintersteiner See was agreed. It should have been the German’s last sign of life.
Search flight with police helicopter failed
“After the man failed to arrive at the agreed meeting point, the rescue chain was set in motion. Search flights with the police helicopter were unsuccessful,” the Kufstein Mountain Rescue Service said.
As a result, the Kufstein mountain rescue service was alerted by the Alpine Police to a search operation in the Zettenkaiser area. The head of operations also requested the Unterland dog handlers, the Scheffau mountain rescue team and a fire crew with a drone and thermal imager.
“Buried Under Rock Slab”
The emergency services then went in search of the missing alpinist and divided accordingly. In the evening there was sad certainty: the alpinist could be located on the so-called Riegesteig. “Unfortunately, all the help came too late for the person who was buried under a boulder,” the mountain rescuers said. The German was killed by the rock.
The salvage via the Riegesteig was extremely difficult in the steep and brittle rocky terrain and had to be stopped well after midnight. The body of the German was eventually recovered by the police helicopter on Friday morning and flown into the valley.
