On Friday, torrential rains kept rescue workers in Vorarlberg busy for hours. The action of a 36-year-old man who thought he had to swim in the Rhine between Lustenau and Höchst as part of a “survival journey” seems all the more unnecessary.
At about 5:15 p.m., when the rain peaked again and traffic in Vorarlberg had partially collapsed, police were informed that a person was swimming in the Rhine – between the railway bridge and the Höchst Rhine Bridge.
When they arrived at the scene, rescuers discovered a 36-year-old swimmer. Initially, however, he refused to leave the Rhine, the level of which at this point had risen from 5.40 meters to almost 8 meters between 2 and 8 pm.
After “good faith” from the water rescuers, the 36-year-old eventually came voluntarily to the bank at Bruggerloch and was received by the alarmed Swiss water rescue service. The man stated that he wanted to take a “survival trip” and swim from Lustenau to Lake Constance and then on to Lochau.
After investigation by the paramedics of the Swiss water rescue service, he was handed over to the Austrian police and taken to the Höchst Police Inspectorate for further clarification and processing of the facts.
