According to the prosecutor general’s office, senior Ukrainian intelligence officer Oleksandr Nakonechnyj has been found dead in his apartment. The woman found her husband with gunshot wounds in the shared apartment in the central Ukrainian city of Kropyvnytsky on Saturday after hearing gunshots, the prosecutor general’s office said in the Telegram online service on Sunday.
Investigations have already been launched, police said, but no further details were given. Local politician Andriy Lavrus wrote on Telegram that Nakonetschnyj had committed suicide. This could not be confirmed initially. Nakonetschnyj has headed the local branch of the SBU in the Kirovograd region since 2021.
Recently removed from office
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi removed SBU chief Ivan Bakanov from his post in July. Zelenskyj justified the move with his alleged insufficient efforts to remove spies and Russian associates from the SBU.
In this context, Zelenskyj had also announced that SBU employees would be subject to an investigation.
