Crashed in the guest garden – emergency operation: Doctors fight for the life of the child (2)

Date:

After the terrible accident on the Salzburger Alpenstrae on Sunday with seven injured, the doctors of the university hospital are fighting for the life of a child (2). Currently in intensive care, the child’s condition is “stable” after emergency surgery. The Public Prosecution Service is investigating the motorist (73), who is also in the clinic.

According to clinic spokesman Wolfgang Fürweger, the child suffered a traumatic brain injury: “It is in intensive care and is being artificially ventilated.” The night before, hospital doctors performed emergency surgery. Three other injured were treated on an outpatient basis. The mother of the child, a 32-year-old, is in the accident hospital: it is unclear whether her life is in danger. At the request of “Krone”, the hospital did not want to give any information about the condition of the woman.

The driver of the accident suddenly lost consciousness
As reported, the mother and her child were walking on the sidewalk of the Alpenstraße around 5:25 PM on Sunday afternoon when they were suddenly hit by a Mercedes SUV belonging to a 73-year-old. The car then rammed into the McDonald’s restaurant. Two other people and a dog were injured in the collision. The car then hit a rock and came to a stop.

Among the injured were the occupants of the car: the driver, a German (73), his wife (77) and a friend (87). Police say the cause of the accident was a medical emergency involving the driver. The 73-year-old is in the neurology department of the university hospital: the suspicion of a stroke or a heart attack has probably not come true. According to Fürweger, it was more of an “internal problem”: the 73-year-old suddenly lost consciousness behind the wheel. “The exact cause is still being elucidated.”

Meanwhile, the Salzburg prosecutor’s office started an investigation. A total of 18 police patrols were present at the time of the accident. A drone was used for the investigation. The professional fire brigade was also on duty with 18 people: the firefighters secured the accident site, carried out security work on the car and placed a privacy screen. The Red Cross was present at the accident site with a total of four emergency doctors, two helicopters and six rescue vehicles.
