“We are against genocide” – with these words Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu pushed for entry restrictions for Russian citizens before EU foreign ministers met in Prague on Tuesday. Against this background, there are no entry restrictions for the citizens of the aggressor state, “they can stay with us on vacation, shop or circumvent sanctions” is morally unacceptable.
“We are against genocide. But something like that is being committed by Russians in Ukraine,” said Reinsalu of the newspaper “Welt”.
“Often don’t know who exactly will come to us”
In his request, Reinsalu also referred to security concerns and the risk of espionage and sabotage. “It’s war in Europe and we often don’t know who exactly is coming to us.”
However, in the European Union (EU), there is disagreement on the subject. Other Baltic states such as Lithuania are also calling for a general visa freeze, which EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell is critical of, for example.
