According to British sources, the Russian army is trying to tie up Ukrainian forces on the northeastern front with regular attacks on the city of Kharkov. In Ukraine’s second-largest metropolis after Kiev, which is within reach of Russian artillery, a bombproof bus stop recently protected people from Russian army fire.
The massive concrete building can accommodate 50 people and has a video system to monitor the environment. According to the metropolis in northeastern Ukraine, a total of 25 such shelters are being built in Kharkiv.
“If there’s an explosion, you have to go to a bomb shelter. Then you instinctively want to hide and not just lie on the ground. At least there are stops now. Let’s see how they prove themselves. In general I think that’s a good case,” says Nina, who is enthusiastic about the bomb-proof bus stop.
“They are very useful. Sometimes I come here in the morning and the shelling is so loud, now we have a place to hide. I am very grateful that we were thought of,” said Vira (pictured below), a civilian from the big city, over the bunker.
“At least a small glimmer of hope”
“We’ve seen shelling before, it’s scary. At least now we can escape here. I heard we’re the first to get something like this. At least a small glimmer of hope,” says Veronika.
Dozens of people were killed or injured in heavy Russian rocket attacks in Kharkov last week, destroying two dormitories and the cultural center of the railway, among other things.
Curfew on National Day
Due to ongoing Russian attacks, authorities announced over the weekend that Kharkiv’s curfew, which normally only applies at night, will be in effect all day ahead of the country’s upcoming Wednesday national holiday. “Stay at home and heed the warnings,” the regional governor wrote on the Telegram message service.
